Database type

A strict separation of these three types of databases is difficult hence most databases contain a mixture of data types. Therefore the classification given here is based on the predominating data type. For example, the major emphasis of a patent database is on hterature, whereas it also comprises numeric and structural data. Another type is the integrated database, which provides a supplement of additional information, especially bibhographic data. Thus, different database types are merged, a textual database and one or more factual databases.

Chemscape Server is a communication device that allows a Web server to communicate with ISIS/Host for performing registration, searching, and browsing across a variety of chemical, textual, and relational database types. 

The Sequence Retrieval System (Etzold et ah, 1996) is a network browser for databases at EBI. The system allows users to retrieve, link, and access entries from all the interconnected resources such as nucleic acid, EST, protein sequence, protein pattern, protein structure, specialist/boutique, and/or bibliographic databases. The SRS is also a database browser of DDBJ, ExPASy, and a number of servers as the query system. The SRS can be accessed from EBI Tools server at http // www2.ebi.ac.uk/Tools/index.html or directly at http //srs6.ebi.ac.uk/. The SRS permits users to formulate queries across a range of different database types via a single interface in three different methods (Figure 3.4) ... 

The kind of information managed, whether it is sales data, electronic docnments, clinical trial data, or recipes for a manufacturing execution system, is fairly independent of the database type (althongh no one wonld build a flat file database for any of these). The choice of relational vs. hierarchical vs. network is primarily dependent on business needs. 

Metatables The metatable defines the mapping from each data source to a set of simple tables (i.e., metatables). The metatable column data types consist of the common database types along with extended types for chemical structures, qualified numbers, and images (e.g., concentration response curves). A qualified number type consists of a basic number along with an optional qualifier (e.g., >) and statistics for summarized values. Results are often reported with qualifiers and/or as summarized values. The use of the qualified number data type can reduce the number of columns that are present in the user interface by up to 75%, thus reducing clutter. 

Specific databases are available for a wide range of uses including the recording and analysis of data on accidents, risk assessments and various test results such as audiometry and LEV tests. Several different versions of each database type, which differ in function, flexibility and price, are available on the market.

There are several database types used for different purposes. On one hand simple models like a hierarchic or network model, which are used for simple data structures like a file management system of common computer... 

Again several methods exist to evaluate the content of these metadatabases. The database types found in each metadatabase can be examined. It is also of extreme importance to know what kind of information is found in each metadatabase representing a medium.
