The construction of well-ordered structures composed of fullerene derivatives not only in the bulk, but also on the surface is essential for the creation of a variety of different functional devices. Fullerene, however, is spherical in shape, and tends to form aggregates, which makes it difficult to construct well-ordered structures. This chapter will focus on the assembly of fullerene derivatives to form 1-D, 2-D, and 3-D organization structures in both the solid state and on the surface. Particular emphasis will be given to descriptions of the liquid crystals and self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of fullerene derivatives with five feathers or legs attached to the fullerene core, as well as the columnar fullerene alignment triggered by thermal crystallization. During the development of... [Pg.2]

The advantage of the LB technique is that it allows systematic studies of 2-D organization, both before and after transfer from the air—water interface onto a soHd substrate. However, the coupling of 3-D self-organization of macromolecules in solution with organization at a soHd surface may best be achieved using the self-assembly technique. [Pg.545]

D/chloro-5-Cyclohexyl-2-Oxo-2,3-D/hydro 1 H-Benzo(fj-Diazepine-1,4 fa) Process Using Sodium Hypochlorite — 40 ml of a solution of sodium hypochlorite of 14.5 British chloro-metric degrees are added to a suspension of 5.4 grams of 7 chloro-5 cyclohexyl-2 oxo-2,3-dihydro 1 H-benzo(f)diazepine-1,4 in BO ml of methylene chloride. The mixture is stirred at room temperature for 15 minutes the solid dissolves rapidly. The organic iayer is decanted, washed with water, dried over anhydrous Sodium sulfate and the solvent evaporated under reduced pressure without exceeding a temperature of 30 C. The residue is taken up in a little diisopropyl ether and the crystals which form are dried. They are recrystallized as rapidly as possible from ethyl acetate. Colorless crystals are obtained (3.9 grams yield, B5%) MP < = 163°C, with decomposition. [Pg.1457]

Specialist Periodical Reports Organic Compounds of Sulfur, Selenium, and Tellurium, Vols. 1-3 (D. H. Reid, Senior Reporter), Vols. 4-6 (D. R. Hogg, Senior Reporter), The Chemical Society, London, 1970-1981. [Pg.710]

There are millions of organic compounds many consist of highly intricate molecules, so their names can be very complicated. You could, for example, find yourself asking for ct-D-glucopyranosyl(l—>2)-(3-D-fructofuranose when all you wanted was sucrose (sugar). However, for most of this text, we will need to know only a few simple organic compounds, and this section will introduce some of them. Chapters 18 and 19 present a more complete introduction to the nomenclature of organic compounds. [Pg.59]
