Field 1 — cylinder specifications DOT stands for the U.S. Department of Transportation, the agency that regnlates the transport and specification of gas cyhnders in the United States. The next entry (e.g., 3AA in the fignre) is the specification for the type and material of the cylinder. The most common cylinders are 3 A, 3AA, 3 AX, 3 AAX, 3T, and 3 AL. All bnt the last refer to steel cyhnders, while 3 AL refers to aluminum. The individual specifications differ mainly in chemical composition of the steel and the gases that are approved for containment and transport. The 3T deals with large bundles of tube trailer cylinders. The next entry in this field (e.g., 2015 in the figure) is the service pressure, in psig. 

Hydraulic cylinders specifications, (i) 2-inch cylinders shall be a minimum 2-inch inside diameter with a minimum safe working capacity of no less than 18,000 pounds axial compressive load at maximum extension. Maximum extension is to include full range of cylinder extensions as recommended by product manufacturer.

Minimum Allowable Wall Thickness—The minimum wall thickness required by DOT cylinder specification. 

Retest periods may vary depending upon use, material of construction, and the cylinder specification. Many steel cylinders must be retested every 5 years. DOT and TC regulations allow for specification 3A and 3AA cylinders to be retested every 10 years provided the cylinder meets the regulatory criteria in 49 CFR 173.34, which are summarized in CGA P-15, Filling of Industrial and Medical Nonflammable Com-... 

Cylinder markings require inspection prior to each filling. These marks include the cylinder specification (for example, ICC, DOT, and CTC or TC), service pressure, and the latest test date. The latest test date must be checked to ensure that the cylinder does not require retesting prior to filling. The original test date may provide information on the required frequency of testing. DOT specification 3A and 3AA cylinders manufactured after December 31, 1945 can be tested at 10-year intervals provided they are in noncorrosive gas service as defined by DOT and TC. 

Gaseous argon is shipped in tube trailers with capacities ranging to more than 40 000 ft (l 130 m ). These trailers are built to comply with DOT cylinder specifications 3A, 3AA, 3AX, 3AAX, or 3T. 

Boron trifluoride is authorized for shipment in cylinders, and is also shipped in motor vehicle tube trailers with tubes built to comply with cylinder specifications. 

Boron trifluoride is shipped in bulk in high pressure tube trailers that have been built to comply with DOT cylinder specifications 3A, 3 A A, 3 AX, 3 A AX, and 3T. Common capacities of these trailers vary from 10 000 lb to 21 000 lb (4540 kg to 9530 kg) of gas. 

DOT requires first that ownership of the cylinder be determined. If it is not the property of the company filling it, there must be written authorization from the registered owner. The cylinder markings described in Section 2.6.3.1 should be examined and verified as suitable for the lading. These markings will indicate the cylinder specification, the approved service pressure, and the latest test date.

The European practice, in contrast, requires that each gas be shipped in a cylinder meeting a unique set of cylinder specifications established for that particular gas.
