Cylinder wrenches

Although not necessary, cylinder wrenches can come in handy as some caps may have been placed very tightly on the cylinder making it difficult to unscrew. The cylinder wrench will make easy work of the matter. These wrenches will also help to open very tight cylinder valves easily. 

Always use a cylinder wrench or other tightly fitting wrench to tighten the regulator nut and tube connections. Use backup wrenches to minimize stress on tubing and fittings where appropriate. 

Troyan13 suggests that all pumps, compressors, turbines, and other equipment should be checked internally before they are turned on. He notes that such an inspection of a large gas compressor revealed rust and scale from nearby pipes, a welding rod, and a small pipe wrench within the cylinder itself. Starting up the compressor before these items were removed could have done enough damage that whole sections would need replacement. This could have delayed the startup for weeks or even months.

Protect the valves on sample cylinders so that they are not accidentally damaged or unseated during transport to the laboratory. Do not use pliers or a wrench to tighten valves on sample cylinders. Excessive tightening will damage the valve and cause a leak. 

Most cylinders are equipped with hand-wheel valves. Those that are not should have a spindle key on the valve spindle or stem while the cylinda- is in service. Only wrenches or other tools provided by the cylinder supplier should be used to remove a cylinder cap or to open a valve. In no case should a screwdriver be used to pry off a stuck cap or should pliers be used to open a cylinder valve. Some valve fittings require washers or gaskets, and the materials of construction should be checked before the regulator is fitted. 

Leaks are often located at the cylinder valve or at coupling or connectors. Leaks can be detected with soapy water and can often be remedied by tightening the connection with the proper wrench. You should turn off the pressure while you are making these adjustments. If you cannot stop the leak, then seek some assistance from a more experienced colleague or instructor or from your EHS department.

Another way to categorize pneumatic devices is as either portable or rock drills. Portable devices include buffers, drills, screwdrivers, wrenches, and paint mixers. This category is powered by a rotary-vane type of air motor. Rock drills or percussion hammers are composed of high-carbon steels. In this type, the compressed air drives a piston down onto a loosely held drill inside a cylinder.

Two types of wrench-operated valves are it-Instrated. In Fig. 5-9, a valve for highly corrosive gases is shown that features an aiiiminum silicon bronze valve body with a Monel valve stem. These valves are operated with a wrench slightly longer than 7 inches (17.8 cm). Fig. 5-19 is a smaller wrench-operated medical valve refeiTed to as a post medical valve because of its shape. It is used on small medical cylinders (Types D and E). These valves are operated with a small wrench approximately 4 inches (10.2 cm) long. 

Do not pile hose, tools, or other objects on top of an acetylene cylinder where they might interfere with quick closing of the valve. On wrench operated cylinder valves, the wrench used for opening the cylinder valve should always be kept on the valve stem when the cylinder is in use. 

Because of the tendency for buildup of particulates, cylinder valves on technical grade hydrogen chloride cylinders are normally wrench operated to facilitate application of torques in excess of that which can be applied manually with a handwheel. Electronic grade hydrogen chloride cylinders are equipped with a tied-diaphragm valve. 

Open cylinder valves slowly. Do not use a wrench to open or close a handwheel valve. If a valve cannot be operated by hand, it should be repaired. 

The handtight plus 3 turns for wrenching identified in both CGA V-1 and NBS Handbook H28, Federal Screw Thread Standards, provides a method for engaging the valve to a steel cylinder that is not affected by manufacturing tolerances on the valve and cylinder threads. [3] This engagement is illustrated by the dimension (L3) in Fig. 8-7. For aluminum cylinders and/or straight threads, consult the manufacturer.
