Gaseous explosions

Confined combustion explosions (gaseous or liquid) usually occur when a flammable vapor leaks into an enclosure and mixes witJi air to form a flarmnable mix-ture, whereupon this mix+ure contacts an ignition source tliat was present before the leak occurred. This type of explosion ctm tUso occur in storage taitks or sliips where tlie vapor space above tlie stored flanunable liquid (fuel) is in tlie cxplosivity range. In tliis case, an ignition source accidentally introduced will cause an explosion. 

Methylamine. This article supplements the one in Vol 1, A225—7 under Aminomethane and Derivatives CA Registry No 74-89-5 Uses in Explosives. Gaseous methylamine is passed into solid Amm Perchlorate below -6.3° to give useful monoproplnts. A mixt so prepd of 85% Amm Perchlorate and 15% methylamine has an Isp of 230 lbsec/lb at 20atm (Ref 1). 

A 2% beryhium mixture with copper produces a unique ahoy of bron2B that is six times stronger than copper metal. This ahoy does not give off sparks when struck with a hammer—a valuable characteristic when metals must be used in explosive gaseous envitonments. This ahoy sometimes contains smah amounts of other metals such as nickel or cobalt, which makes for excellent electrical conductivity for switching equipment, given the ahoy s simultaneous hardness and nonsparking qualities. Beryhium is also transparent to X-rays, which makes it ideal for windows for X-ray tubes. 

Combustible (and explosive) gaseous mixtures consist of gases serving as "fuels (such as H2, H2S, CO, CS2, CH4, C2H2,... 

Cook (Ref 48, p 46) also gives in Fig 3.1 curves of velocity D versus log p for gaseous explosives and in Table 3.2, p 46 he gives constants of the above equation for 15 explosive gaseous mixtures. Fig 3.1 is not reproduced here...

The simplest method for producing a spherical combustion in gases is to place a combustible (but not explosive) gaseous mixture in a thin latex, rubber or plastic balloon and ignite it in the center by means of an electric spark... 

Because the method of thermo chemical calcns given in Ref 10a, p 106-14 became obsolete, the US Bureau of Mines published in 1941 1942 Technical Papers 632 642 compiled by F. W. Brown. The first paper deals with temperatures of explosion gaseous products and the effects of changes in carbonaceous material, while the 2nd paper deals with pressures of explosion. 

It can sustain an explosion without damage. Nevertheless it will not hold out in the case of a detonation. The use of a fixed hed enables to contain the dangerous catalyst 3) exclusively in the reactor which is the strongest equipment of the plant. Moreover explosive gaseous mixture can he used safely as feedstock. 

Hazard classes (DOT)— The nine descriptive terms established by the United Nations committee of experts to categorize hazardous chemical, physical, and biological materials. Categories are flammable liquids, explosives, gaseous oxidizers, radioactive materials, corrosives, flammable...
