Cylic

Epoxides are cylic ethers which are highly reactive because of the strained bond angles of a three-membered ring. Because of the high reactivity of epoxides, they are the starting materials for so-called epoxy resins used for high-strength adhesives. [Pg.69]

These and other related enolate ratios are interpreted in terms of a tight, reactantlike cyclic TS in THF and a looser TS in the presence of HMPA. The cylic TS favors the E-enolate, whereas the open TS favors the Z-enolate. The effect of the HMPA is to solvate the Li+ ion, reducing the importance of Li+ coordination with the carbonyl oxygen.13... [Pg.9]

The writing of an analytical profile of aspirin, this drug of drugs, poses two major dilemmas. The first is in the name itself. There are many countries where Aspirin is still a trade-name of the German firm Bayer AG, and Acetylsali-cylic Acid is used as the generic. Yet, I decided to use the former because it is the U.S.P. and B.P., the better known worldwide and the more elegant name. [Pg.3]

Aromatic amines that have been used include o-toluidine, p-aminosali-cylic acid, p-aminobenzoic acid, diphenylamine and p-aminophenol. Their ability to react preferentially with a particular carbohydrate or class of carbohydrate is often useful, e.g. p-aminophenol, which shows some specificity for ketoses compared with aldoses and is useful for measuring fructose. These reagents have proved particularly useful for the visualization and identification of carbohydrates after separation of mixtures by paper or thin-layer chromatography, when colour variations and the presence or absence of a reaction aid the interpretation of the chromatogram. [Pg.326]

Racemic modifications may be resolved. There are very few examples of this approach having been employed successfully. The racemic cylic ether (RS)-36, which contains two CH2OCH2CO2H arms attached to the 3 and 3 positions on the axially chiral binaphthyl units, has been resolved (48-50, 93, 94) to optical purity in both its enantiomers by liquid-liquid chromatography using a chiral stationary phase of either (R)- or (S)-valine adsorbed on diatomaceous eaitii. Very recently, the optical resolution of crown ethers (/ S)-37 and (/ 5)-38, incorporating the elements of planar chirality in the form of a rron -doubly bridged ethylene unit, has been achieved (95) by HPLC on (+)-poly(triphenyl-methyl methacrylate). [Pg.229]

Sulfasalazine Sulfasalazine, 5-[p-[(4,6-dimethyl-2-pyridinyl)sulfamoyl]phenylazo]sali-cylic acid (33.1.22), is a derivative of sulfapyridine drug described above and one of the few sulfanilamides in which the free amino group in the benzene ring is modified, and it is synthesized by an azo-coupling reaction of a diazo salt, which is synthesized by reacting sulfapyridine (33.1.21) with nitrous acid and salicylic acid alkaline media [24,25]. [Pg.505]

Proteins in aqueous samples with concentrations of at least 5 pg/ml are precipitated by acids as trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or sulfosali-cylic acid. The final concentration of acid should be 7.5 -10% (w/v). Biologic activity is mostly and antigenicity is sometimes destroyed by acidic precipitation. [Pg.124]

The discovery of aspirin or acetylsali-cylic acid as a pain reliever is credited to Felix Hoffman (1868-1946) who was looking for a substitute for sodium salicylate to treat his father s arthritis. Hoffman uncovered and continued the work of Gerhardt from forty years before. Hoffman reacted salicylic acid with acetic acid to produce acetylsalicylic acid in 1897 Figure 13.3. [Pg.168]

A compound that includes an aminopyrimidine ring as well as the quaternary salt present in thiamine shows preferential inhibition of absorption of that co-factor by coccidia parasites over uptake by vertebrates. The compound is thus used in poultry where coccidiosis is an economically important disease. Condensation of ethoxymethylenemalononitrile (42-1) with the amidine (42-2) leads to the aminopyrimidine (42-4), probably via the intermediate addition-elimination intermediate (42-3). The nitrile group is then reduced to the methylamino derivative (42-5) by means of hthium aluminum hydride. Exhaustive methylation, for example by reaction with formaldehyde and formic acid, followed by methyl iodide leads to the quaternary methiodide (42-6). The quaternary salt is then displaced by bromine, and the resulting benzyhc-like cylic halide (42-7) is displaced by 2-picoline (42-8). There is thus obtained amprolium (42-9) [43]. [Pg.348]

Primary and secondary amines also react with epoxides (or in situ produced episulfldes >r aziridines)to /S-hydroxyamines (or /S-mercaptoamines or 1,2-diamines). The Michael type lddition of amines to activated C—C double bonds is also a useful synthetic reaction. Finally unines react readily with. carbonyl compounds to form imines and enamines and with carbo-cylic acid chlorides or esters to give amides which can be reduced to amines with LiAlH4 (p. Ilf.). All these reactions are often applied in synthesis to produce polycyclic alkaloids with itrogen bridgeheads (J.W. Huffman, 1967) G. Stork, 1963 S.S. Klioze, 1975). [Pg.291]
