Cyclic olefin copolymers

With the growing interest for the polynorbomene, photoresist polymer, and cyclic olefin copolymer, the synthesis norbornene or bicyclo[2,2,l]-2-heptene (NBN) has drawn significant attention because it is one of the most important precursor for these materials. Norbornene is produced by the reaction between ethylene and cyclopentadiene (CPD) via the Diels-Alder condensation process at elevated temperature and pressure [1,2].

Cyclic olefin copolymers are copolymerized from linear and cyclic (norbornene) olefins (as shown in Figure 4.21) followed by hydrogenation of double bonds.

Copolymers of ethylene and norbomene exhibit excellent transparency, high moisture barrier, high strength and stiffness, and low shrinkage. In comparison to poly(ethylene) (PE) and polypropylene) (PP), they show a very low gas permeability. They are used for blister packaging in pharmacy applications and for flexible films for food packaging. Multilayer films consisting of PP outer layers and a cyclic olefin copolymer are in use.

Cyclic olefin copolymers (COC)s are engineering thermoplastics derived from norbornene. An addition polymer of norbornene was originally described in 1955 (1).
