Cycles filtering centrifuges

The main types of filtering centrifuges are suspended batch machines, which are discontinuous in their operation automatic short-cycle batch machines and continuous conveyor centrifuges. In suspended centrufuges the filter media are canvas or other fabric or woven metal cloth. In automatic machines fine metal screens are used in conveyor centrifuges the filter medium is usually the slotted wall of the basket itself. 

The commercial production of mitomycin involves the preparation of mitomycin-containing broths by culturing a mitomycin-producing organism, e.g. Streptomyces caespitosus, in suitable media as described at length In the literature. At the end of the fermentation cycle the whole broth is usually centrifuged, filtered or otherwise treated to separate the solids (mycelia) from the supernatant which contains substantially all of the antibiotic activity. 

When an aqueous slurry is filtered in a plate and frame press, fitted with two 50 mm thick frames each 150 mm square, operating with a pressure difference of 350 kN/m2, the frames are filled in 3600 s (1 h). How long will it take to produce the same volume of filtrate as is obtained from a single cycle when using a centrifuge with a perforated basket, 300 mm diameter and 200 mm deep The radius of the inner surface of the slurry is maintained constant at 75 mm and the speed of rotation is 65 Hz (3900 rpm). 

It is critical to avoid injecting solids into a chromatography column, but the tan liquid still looked cloudy. So Denby and Scott took turns between classes to repeat the centrifugation and filtration five times. Dry-cleaning machines are usually provided with a centrifugal pump to force the liquid through a filter, and with a blower to move and filter the solvent vapour phase also. After the cleaning cycle, the solvent is drained from the cleaning chamber and may be reused, provided that the level of dissolved contaminants is not approaching saturation, otherwise it is regenerated by distillation or cleaned by mechanical filtration.
