Cole Engestrom (1993) trace the begiimings of the ideas that cognition is mediated by the social and physical environment to the early twentieth century. They specifically note that the cultural-historical approach advocated in the writings of Leont ev (1932), Luria (1928, 1932) and Vygotsky (1929, 1960, 1978) has continued to exert substantial influence until today. These writers contributed one specific idea to this model of learning the culture surrounding the individual influences what is learned and how it is learned. 

The perceived sensitivity of plant cells to the hydrodynamic stress associated with aeration and agitation conditions is typically attributed to the physical characteristics of the suspended cells, namely their size, the presence of a cell wall, the existence of a large vacuole, and their tendency to aggregate. Thus, the culture may be mixed and transferred to a hypodermic syringe surrounded by a constant-temperature jacket at desired intervals, the mixture is subcultured by ejecting small volumes from the syringe nozzle into subculture medium. 

Fungicidal activity was determined by the disc method and zones of inhibition were recorded by measuring the diameter (mm) of the inhibition zone. Yeast cultures (S. cerevisiae) showed growth inhibition (clear area surrounding disc) by sediment extracts from all stations when compared to control discs. HPLC analysis of sediment extracts showed more than 20 components in the migration profile of each station. Of these components, a fraction demonstrated to possess cytolytic activity in the crude extract (Ve = 24 ml) was present in all stations when compared to the migration profile of the active fraction (Figure 2). 

Social and cultural studies of organic food, on the other hand, emphasise the many symbolic meanings of food and the activities surrounding its purchase, preparation and consumption.
