Artistic expressions

The first commercial buildings, built in about 2000 B.C.E., were simple structures that represented the beginnings of architecture—a scries of columns, walls, and roofs. Columns represented the upright human stance, walls represented human territoriality, and roofs both kept the rain out and created a crown, or head, for the structure. Walls also represented a separation between the plant and animal world and the human world. The walls of a courtyard formed a human space that became the city. Although the form of buildings has evolved over time, buildings today fundamentally provide these same basic human functions artistic expression, separation, definition, and shelter. 

For him, the reference to Russian constructivism also meant taking the constructivist propensity for symbolism as well as the constructivists interest in the interface between form and the outside world a step further, and making selective use of them. The contrast between serial production in architecture and the improvised assembly of the elements of Kosmatschof s sculpture was almost symbolic for the restrictions placed on the range of artistic expression in the Soviet state.

We have been examining line as a way to define space and describe emotion. There is an additional function that line can serve in artistic expression—allowing the artist to represent the third dimension on a flat surface. Depth on a flat surface can be achieved through the use of two systems, atmospheric perspective and linear perspective. 

Students will discuss how each artist expresses their ideas based on the definition of each style, the meaning of the title of the work, and how the title is seen in the picture. 

Compare and contrast the works of artists from the three movements, in terms of style and subject matter. Discuss how each artist expresses his ideas based on the definition of each style and how he uses the elements of art and the principles of good composition. 

Another feature of postmodernism is indicated by a changing taste in artistic expression. There are many trends in postmodern art here I mention only one, commonly known as pop art. In recent centuries, painters gave their visions of selected scenes from life landscapes...

Figure 9-64 shows some beautiful representatives of quasicrystals and Figure 9-65 depicts another quasicrystal and a modern sculpture that could be taken as an artistic expression of a quasicrystal although the artist was not aware of the existence of such materials. The artistic appearance of quasi crystals, however, predates their scientific entry by centuries [150], The discovery of such cultural monuments has generated lively discussions even in the general press [151], Concluding, we quote again Mackay [155], who stated that... 

Science is an international enterprise, which the examples in this book make clear. Although communities may differ enormously in their cultures, their religious convictions, their artistic expressions, and their political structures, in the arena of science, the world s diverse human groups are unified. There is no German science, no Asian science, no Hindu science. Meditation, chanting, prayer, communing with nature, playing music, and artistic expression ol all sorts arc especially attractive ways ol changing consciousness because they require little outside oneself. This is not to say that you shouldn t play polo if playing polo gets you high, but it would be useful to have some simpler, cheaper method in your repertory as well... 

Style. Style is the mode of expressing thought in language. It is the quality which gives distinctive character and excellence to artistic expression. The effectiveness of a report depends to a large extent on the style of its architecture. Absence of clarity is a serious matter since it rebukes utilitarian standards. Clarity of thought precisely set down may result in no more than a flat desert of undistinguished sentences, but at least there are no obscurities.

While we have discovered several groups of natives who have no conception whatsoever of religion, we have never come across a race (no matter how far it happened to be removed from the center of civilization) that was completely without some form of artistic expression.

An analysis of Moir6 patterns has been given by Hans Giger [8-31]. Moires are often used in artistic expression [8-32]. The work of the Swiss sculptor Werner Witschi is illustrated by Figure 8-45. 

In a wider sense, the terms symmetry and order are synonymous. Everything which is invariant or structured conveys the presence of symmetry, as, for example, the laws of conservation in physics. Symmetry and the lack of symmetry (asymmetry) play a major role in all artistic expression such as architecture, painting and music.
