Rhizopus oryzae was immobilized in polyurethane foam cubes by Sun et al. -" The effects of the cube size on cell immobilization, cell growth and L(-i-)-lactic acid production were studied, limnobilization was accomplished by simple adsorption. The use of small cubes for R. oiyzae immobilization was very effective in increasing the productivity of L(-t-)-lactic acid by the immobilized cells. The inoculum size was effective for increasing the immobilization ratio (ratio of the number of cubes containing cells to the total number of cubes). We discussed mass transport problems of polyurethane foam and how the application of certain composite technologies mitigates this difficulty earlier in this chapter.

Compressive strength is the most frequently measured and specified mechanical property. Test specimens in the form of cubes or cylinders (of sizes specified in the respective standards) are cut directly from the blocks. The results show considerable scatter which mostly results from a non-homogeneous macrostructure or a non--uniform degree of sintering. In this respect, conditions of the manufacturing processes and the technological parameters can be inferred from the strength values. 

In Fig. 12 are represented two particles of ore of equal technological state shown as cubes between the faces of a crushing or testing machine. Commercially, Agilent Technologies produces chips for both direct infusion into a mass spectrometer and for HPLC-MS applications. The chips accommodate nanoflow rates with an electrospray ionisation source, are about the size of a credit card and are rensable. The infusion chip is for collecting direct MS or tandem MS data. The protein HPLC chip has both a sample enrichment and CIS separation column on the chip, as well as the connections and spray nozzles for electrospray. There are also a small molecule chip and a glycan chip. The chip being used is placed in a Chip Cube MS interface which positions the sprayer tip perpendicular to the MS inlet (Figure 10.7).
