Cross-section geometries

Steel, copper, and brass fiber may have a variety of aspect ratios, shape, ie, straight versus curved fibers and cross-sectional geometry, surface roughness, and chemical compositions. Fibers having tight specifications in terms of cleanliness, chemical composition, and aspect ratio ate necessary. The fibers are usually machined from larger metallic forms. [Pg.274]

In any particular material, the flexural stiffness will be defined by the second moment of area, /, for the cross-section. As with a property such as area, the second moment of area is independent of the material - it is purely a function of geometry. If we consider a variety of cross-sections as follows, we can easily see the benefits of choosing carefully the cross-sectional geometry of a moulded plastic component. [Pg.74]

The analysis given in Macbeth (M4) continues by assuming that the term dh effectively represents the cross-sectional geometry of the normal rod-bundle data. If this assumption is correct, then the general correlation [Eq. (18)], may be applied by representing A and C as functions of G and dh for a given pressure. It was found that simple power functions were adequate, and a correlation was obtained by computer optimization which predicted 97% of the vertical-upflow normal data (Nos. 6-15 inclusive in Table V) to within 12%. [Pg.266]

Barnett confirmed that dh does not fully describe the cross-sectional geometry for burn-out in an annulus, and he decided to introduce as an extra term—the wetted equivalent diameter, i.e., the hydraulic diameter dw = d0 — di. The final expressions found suitable for A, B, and C are... [Pg.268]

A number of authors have considered channel cross-sections other than rectangular [102-104]. Figure 2.17 shows some examples of cross-sections for which friction factors and Nusselt numbers were computed. In general, an analytical solution of the Navier-Stokes and the enthalpy equations in such channel geometries would be involved owing to the implementation of the wall boundary condition. For this reason, usually numerical methods are employed to study laminar flow and heat transfer in channels with arbitrary cross-sectional geometry. [Pg.171]

The vibrating faces are opposite each other in the rectangular cross-section geometry and so the possibility exists for the severe erosion of these faces. For this reason the design of such apparently simple flow reactors must be handled with care. Unless the pipe is seamless then high-powered ultrasonic vibration is also likely to find any weaknesses in the welded construction, particularly at corner joints. [Pg.290]

It is hardly possible to accurately determine the quality of a profile section before it reaches the end of the production line, as it needs to be examined in its fully vulcanized state. This is usually done by cutting of a small section and examining it manually for surface defects or deviations in the cross-section geometry, or - more recently - by automated visual inspection. [Pg.678]

At the production line in question, the profiles surface quality and cross-section geometry deviation was already analyzed and recorded by online optical quality inspection systems. These camera based systems usually mark defective profile sections visibly, to separate them out for the operating personnel [910]. In some cases, this data was analyzed to quantify the amount and kind of failures statistically to control the rate of production faults. For an integrated management of process, user interaction, and fault information, and quantitative quality data, the records of these inspection systems also had to be integrated. [Pg.683]

Prediction of the heat-transfer coefficient for this problem is complicated by the fact that the local coefficient is very high at the start of heat transfer and decreases as the conduction into or out of the fluid builds up an adverse temperature gradient. A number of analytical and numerical solutions for this and other constant cross-sectional geometries are given by Shah and London [11], but most... [Pg.507]

Turbulent Flow. The thermal entry length solutions for smooth ducts for several cross-sectional geometries have been summarized [46]. As for laminar flow, the Nusselt numbers in the thermal region are higher than those in the fully developed region. However, unlike laminar flow, Nu,x and NuxHi are very nearly the same for turbulent flow. The local and mean Nusselt numbers for a circular tube with and boundary conditions are [46] ... [Pg.1317]

The lap shear fatigue test for the joints of the front cab module of the Maglev Transrapid TR08 has been analyzed by a fine detail analysis with 3D solid elements using the real cross-section geometry. The adherend materials are aluminum on one side and GRP on the other see also Section 32.5.1. The PU adhesive Sikaflex -254 Booster is modeled with the Ogden strain energy equation (Eq. (1), with N=2). The computed stiffness correlates well with the test results. The local stress distribution is visualized in Fig. 32.11. [Pg.533]

A series of parallel spines (current collectors) are connected at the upper end to a common connector bar (connector bus) which ends with a plate lug. The spines are positioned in the centre of tubes made of either woven, braided or felt acid-resistant glass wool or synthetic organic fibres. Depending on their shape (cross-sectional geometry), tubes may be cylindrical (round), elliptical (oval) or rectangular (square). Cylindrical tubes with the spines (current... [Pg.214]

Cross section geometry of four types of tubular plates (a) cylindrical (round), (b) elliptical (oval), (c) square and (d) rectangular. Cylindrical and elliptical tubular plates are used for flooded batteries, whereas square and rectangular designs are preferred forVRLA batteries with ACM separators. [Pg.217]

The combination El of a material property and beam cross section geometry is referred to as the beam bending stiffness. It determines the curvature for a given applied moment. The maximum stress (t in a symmetric beam can therefore also be expressed by substituting in Eq. (C.3)... [Pg.486]

Every control rod s worth was calibrated with either the positive period method or the inverse kinetics method during the low power test of each operational cycle. The calculation was conducted with the CITATION code based on three dimensional diffusion theory using the same cross section, geometry and atomic number densities as MAGI. After correcting with the previous cycle s C/E, the calculated values were compared with the measurements. [Pg.34]
