Crompton studies

Recent studies by Crompton et al. have shown that oxidant stress may open a Ca-sensitive, non-selective pore in the inner mitochondrial membrane that is blocked by cyclosporin A (Crompton, 1990 Crompton and Costi, 1990). This pore opening results in massive mitochondrial swelling, dissipation of the transmembrane proton gradient and disruption of mitochondrial energy production (Crompton et al., 1992). Since mitochondria may play a role as a slow, high-capacity cytosolic calcium buffer (Isenberg et al., 1993), disruption of mitochondrial function may also contribute to calcium overload and cell injury. [Pg.60]

A complementary style of nationality-based tourism studies involves the direct assessment of what motivates travellers, how they behave and what they derive from their experiences. Several of these studies are comparative, while others focus on just one nationality group. The comparative studies include work that compares groups on destination image and attitudes, on motivation, on travel patterns, in communication style and on satisfaction levels (Chadee Mattson, 1996 Kozak, 2001 Kozak Neild, 1998 Reisinger Turner, 1999 Richardson Crompton, 1998 Yuan MacDonald, 1990). From the outset, motivation has been an important topic of leisure and tourism study (Crompton, 1979 Dann, 1981 Galloway, 1998 Veal, 1997). Wahab (1975) suggested that the area of travel motivation is fundamental in tourism studies and basic to tourism development. Crompton (1979) observed that it is possible to describe tourist behaviour and to classify tourists but it is more difficult to answer the question why - the key factor underlying all tourist behaviour. For both phases of the present study, the outcomes point to several common and notable findings. Firstly, the results from both phases of this first study indicated that the motivational dimensions of escape/relax, novelty, relationship, and self-development within the new travel career pattern approach are the most important travel motivation factors. A number of studies have endorsed and reinforced these kind of results. For example, the novelty-seeking motive has received considerable attention in tourism research since it was introduced into the tourism literature by Cohen (1972).
