Large specimens of amorphous polymers that can be subjected to large loads and can produce large displacements in creep generally have been the subject in creep studies of physical aging. Electronic sensing of displacements with sensitive oscillators and amplifiers have been employed in measuring displacements when loads of 1-50 kg were applied. [Pg.35]

The majority of polymer flow processes are characterized as low Reynolds number Stokes (i.e. creeping) flow regimes. Therefore in the formulation of finite element models for polymeric flow systems the inertia terms in the equation of motion are usually neglected. In addition, highly viscous polymer flow systems are, in general, dominated by stress and pressure variations and in comparison the body forces acting upon them are small and can be safely ignored. [Pg.111]

Creep of Thick-walled Cylinders. The design of relatively thick-walled pressure vessels for operation at elevated temperatures where creep caimot be ignored is of interest to the oil, chemical, and power industries. In steam power plants, pressures of 35 MPa (5000 psi) and 650°C are used. Quart2 crystals are grown hydrothermaHy, using a batch process, in vessels operating at a temperature of 340—400°C and a pressure of 170 MPa (25,000 psi). In general, in the chemical industry creep is not a problem provided the wall temperature of vessels made of Ni—Cr—Mo steel is below 350°C. [Pg.86]

Creep. The phenomenon of creep refers to time-dependent deformation. In practice, at least for most metals and ceramics, the creep behavior becomes important at high temperatures and thus sets a limit on the maximum appHcation temperature. In general, this limit increases with the melting point of a material. An approximate limit can be estimated to He at about half of the Kelvin melting temperature. It is generally accepted that, all other things being equal, the lower the secondary creep, the better the fiber is in terms of wear, shape retention, and crease resistance. This does not mean that glass, which has no secondary creep, is better in abrasion resistance than high tenacity viscose rayon, which has secondary creep, because the respective energy absorption capacities of these two materials, exclusive of secondary creep, are not equal. Nor does it mean that fibers that exhibit secondary creep are of no value. For fabrics to meet the requirements of wear, crease resistance, and shape retention, the load and extension yield points should not be exceeded during use. [Pg.455]

The role, design, and maintenance of creepproof barriers in traps, especially those in oil DPs, remain to be fully explored. In general, uncracked oil from a DP is completely inhibited from creeping by a surface temperature of <223 K. On the other hand, a cold trap, to perform effectively in an ordinary vacuum system, must be <173 K because of the vapor pressure of water, and <78 K because of the vapor pressure of CO2. For ultracontroUed vacuum environments, LN temperature or lower is required. CO2 accumulation on the trap surface must be less than one monolayer. The effectiveness of a LN trap can be observed by the absence of pressure pips on an ionization gauge when LN is replenished in the reservoir. [Pg.378]
