It will bear repeating, often, that medicinal chemists are always the critical point in every preclinical development. Who are they, and what so far have they come up with as medicines The imagination and creative skills of the chemists may not have been fully exploited by the industry. This in itself gives hope for the future, but for the moment we have relatively few truly distinct structures, and we would like to exploit these. 

Almost all of the work described in these papers was done by my coworkers. I have been exceptionally fortunate to have had many creative, skilled and hardworking assistants in these research endeavors. The work was never simple or straightforward. It was usually highly dangerous. In spite of that, we had only one serious accident (to P. R. Rao and myself) and that was of my making. Complex natural products present excellent opportunities for organic chemists to exercise their creative skills, and also for testing the limits of current synthetic methodology. In the course of these adventures, imexpected reactions are almost certain to occur, and although these are initially unwanted, it is from such reactions that new science arises. The very fact that they were "imexpected" means that the potential exists for the advancement of the discipline, even more so than might have been accomplished by the initial imdertaking. In this lecture, I hope to discuss such a situation our progress toward a complex natural product, and the benefits of some "unexpected" reactions. 

Although some creativity skills may be taught to engineers in the educational setting, often the main focus is on technical skills such as math and physics therefore, it is crucial to also incorporate creativity and innovation in the professional field (Badran 2007 Cropley and Cropley 2000 Mao et al. 2009 Tomkvist, 1998). 

Good problem-solving and creative skills are needed to solve practical problems. 

With the somewhat surprising retrosynthesis and proposal for the synthesis of pyperidine-2-carboxylic acid, we conclude this chapter with some well-known rearrangements that are demonstrated as a retrosynthetically feasible concept. In conclusion, retrosynthetic consideration of rearrangements requires the creative skill of synthetic chemists but rewards them with the discovery of short, unexpected synthetic routes to selected target molecules. 

Love alone is, of course, not enough, and the additional constellation of talents required for excellence in creative research—a measure of intelligence, perseverance, a capacity for hard work, some manual dexterity and a pleasure in practising this dexterity, imagination, cool critical objectivity— is not at all common. But then this applies to all spheres of creative skills—literature, fine arts, music. Many try but few get very far.
