A significant improvement in the administration of a lipid-containing emulsion was achieved with a special additive to PC. As shown in Fig. 22b, the improved behavior of the new polycarbonate PC2 proved in practice to be verifiable by fracture mechanical fatigue crack growth experiments. In the presence of the fat emulsion the more lipid-resistant PC2 shows a higher fatigue threshold value AK as well as an improvement by a factor of two in AKcf in comparison to PCI used so far. [Pg.141]

The use of fatigue data and crack length measurements to predict the remaining service life of a stmcture under cyclic loading is possibly the most common application of fracture mechanics for performance prediction. In complex stmctures the growth of cracks is routinely monitored at intervals, and from data about crack growth rates and the applied loadings at that point in the stmcture, a decision is made about whether the stmcmre can continue to operate safely until the next scheduled inspection. [Pg.549]

Fracture Mechanics. Linear elastic fracture mechanics (qv) (LEFM) can be appHed only to the propagation and fracture stages of fatigue failure. LEFM is based on a definition of the stress close to a crack tip in terms of a stress intensification factor K, for which the simplest general relationship is... [Pg.90]

The NACE publication Corrosion Fatigue gives a comprehensive account of all aspects of the subject, and in this work a review of the application of fracture mechanics for studying the phenomenon has been presented by McEvily and Wei , whilst Kitagawa has given a detailed account of crack propagation in unnotched steel specimens. This work should be consulted for details of testing and interpretation of results. [Pg.1054]

Fracture mechanic The fracture mechanics theory developed for metals is also adaptable for use with plastics. The basic concepts remain the same, but since metals and plastics are different they require different techniques to describe their fatigue-failure behaviors. Some of the comments made about crack and fracture influences on fatigue performance relate to the theory of fracture mechanics. The fracture mechanics theory method, along with readily... [Pg.85]

Brocklehurst [37] has written an exhaustive review of the early work (prior to 1977) on fracture in polycrystalline graphite. Much of this work focused on the fracture behavior of nuclear graphites. In most investigations considered, conventional fracture mechanics tests and analysis were performed for macroscopic cracks. LEFM provided an adequate criterion for failure. Additionally, results on work of fracture, strain energy release rate, and fatigue crack propagation were reported. [Pg.517]

Now the measured value of KIc or GIc is dependent upon the sharpness of the crack employed and an essential requirement of fracture mechanics testing is that a "naturally sharp crack is used for the experimental determination of K,c or G C. If a relatively blunt crack is used, an optimistically high value of KIc or G,c may be recorded. Suitable techniques include slow, controlled pressure applied to a razor blade, possibly having pre-cooled the specimen in liquid nitrogen and fatigue crack growth. [Pg.49]

In this fracture mechanics approach, the rate of crack growth is a function of the maximum value of tearing energy attained during the fatigue cycle. For a strip with an edge or central cut cycled in tension, a relation between cycles to failure and the initial cut size for the case where that cut is relatively very small can be derived8,9 ... [Pg.250]

The rate of crack growth is often it more useful parameter than is fatigue life Fracture mechanics techniques have been widely applied lo the crack growth behavior of high temperature alloy s. [Pg.774]
