Corrosion prevention and control

The simple corrosion cell (Fig. 10.2) serves to illustrate possible strategies for the prevention of electrochemical corrosion at least one of the following must be modified  [Pg.518]

The anode, anode-electrolyte interface or anode reaction. [Pg.519]

The cathode or cathode-electrolyte interface or cathode reaction. [Pg.519]

It should also be noted that the components of real corrosion cells (and the electrochemical reactions) are not always easy to identify or to isolate. [Pg.519]

A wide range of methods has been developed (largely in an empirical fashion) for the control of corrosion. For convenience, the methods for protection may be subdivided into selection of material and design considerations, modification of the electrolyte, change in the electrode potential, and surface coatings. [Pg.519]

In 1982, the Commonwealth Department of Science and Technology initiated a study to determine the feasibility of the establishment in Australia of a National Centre for Corrosion Prevention and Control. The feasibility study consisted of the determination of the annual cost of corrosion to Australia, the need for a national center for corrosion prevention and control, and a review of national corrosion centers in European countries. The study considered organizational structure, technical functions, and the financial structure of the proposed center. The results were presented in a 1983 report entitled Corrosion in Australia the Report of the Australian National Centre for Corrosion Prevention and Control Feasibility Study. (5). [Pg.323]

The savings or avoidable cost was estimated to be equal to 1.2% of the Australian GNP in 1982 of which 35% of the savings was because of personal consumption expenditures, 55% because of fixed-capital formation, and 5% because of federal, state, and local government expenditures. The various industry sectors expressed the need for a national center for corrosion prevention and control to lower corrosion costs. The three roles of the corrosion control center are consulting, research, and education. [Pg.323]

The two remaining components of the electrochemical industry are corrosion prevention and controlling and measuring devices. In both of these components, our interest is only in those devices whose operation is based on electrochemical principles. Such items fall within our definition of the electrochemical industry. There were no published figures available for the shipments value of either of these two components in 1958 or 1963. As a result, estimates based on interviews and correspondence with members of the industry are given. [Pg.283]
