Corona discharge application

Uehara, T., Corona discharge treatment of polymers. In Mittal, K.L. and Pizzi, A. (Eds.), Adhesion Promotion Techniques — Technological Applications. Dekker, New York, 1999, pp. 191-204. [Pg.708]

Several environment-friendly surface preparation for the treatment of mbber soles with radiations have been recently studied. These treatments are clean (no chemicals or reactions by-products are produced) and fast, and furthermore online bonding at shoe factory can be produced, so the future trend in surface modification of substrates in shoe industry will be likely directed to the industrial application of those treatments. Corona discharge, low-pressure RF gas plasma, and ultraviolet (UV) treatments have been successfully used at laboratory scale to improve the adhesion of several sole materials in shoe industry. Recently, surface modification of SBR and TR by UV radiation has been industrially demonstrated in shoe industry... [Pg.769]

A detailed description of sources used in atmospheric pressure ionization by electrospray or chemical ionization has been compiled.2 Atmospheric pressure has been used in a wide array of applications with electron impact, chemical ionization, pressure spray ionization (ionization when the electrode is below the threshold for corona discharge), electrospray ionization, and sonic spray ionization.3 Interferences potentially include overlap of ions of about the same mass-charge ratio, mobile-phase components, formation of adducts such as alkali metal ions, and suppression of ionization by substances more easily ionized than the analyte.4 A number of applications of mass spectroscopy are given in subsequent chapters. However, this section will serve as a brief synopsis, focusing on key techniques. [Pg.59]

We can define the principal electrical properties of polymers in terms of four characteristics electrical resistance, capacitive properties, dielectric strength, and arc resistance. We can change the surface characteristics of a polymer by subjecting it to a corona discharge generated by a strong electrical field. Lastly, we must also consider the influence of other physical properties on the application of polymers in electrical applications. [Pg.181]

The application of flame or corona discharges is thought to be effective mainly by oxidizing the surface, so giving a polar, wettable layer. Such treatments are most appropriate for treating large areas swiftly, as in the manufacture of plastic film. [Pg.105]

Corona discharge is a popular method for applications on a large scale and because it can be carried out quickly in dry conditions in general it is less hazardous than chemical treatment and leaves no visible sign on the surfaces treated. On the other hand, there is some evidence that it is less effective in promoting adhesion to plastics than treatment with a substance like chromic acid. [Pg.106]

Parts molded from polyetherimide can be assembled with all common thermoplastic assembly methods. Adhesives that are recommended include epoxy, urethane, and cyanoacrylate. However, service temperature must be taken into consideration in choosing an adhesive because PEI parts are generally used for high-temperature applications. Good adhesion can be effected by simple solvent wipe, but surface treatment by corona discharge, flame treatment, or chromic acid etch will provide the highest bond strengths. [Pg.375]
