Corner joints

The vibrating faces are opposite each other in the rectangular cross-section geometry and so the possibility exists for the severe erosion of these faces. For this reason the design of such apparently simple flow reactors must be handled with care. Unless the pipe is seamless then high-powered ultrasonic vibration is also likely to find any weaknesses in the welded construction, particularly at corner joints. 

In cases where corner joints are unavoidable while constructing tanks, it is necessary to ensure that there are no air pockets, pits or surface irregularities at weld joints to avoid possibility of air trap between the rubber lining and the metal surface. For this, suitable vent holes are to be provided. A typical method of avoiding air being trapped in weld joints is shown in figures 6.6 A, B, C and D.

Corner joints for relatively flexible adherends such as sheet metal should be designed with reinforcements for support. With very thin adherends, angle joints offer low strengths because of high peel concentrations. A design...

This chapter will describe methods for performing an interface-comer failure analysis, the limitations to such an approach, supporting experimental studies, and a discussion of unresolved issues in its application. Although the focus is on butt joints, the approach applies to sharp-cornered joints in general and results for a sharp-cornered, embedded inclusion are also presented.
