Corner Joint A comer joint is a connection between two members at right angles to each other that is made with a fuU penetration weld, partial penetration weld or fillet welds. 

A wide section of the guideline focuses on the brittle failure mechanisms. In particular, according to experiences gained from examining the performances of RC structures after seismic events, a wide section focuses on the most common brittle collapse mechanisms resulting from shear failure of partially confined beam-column joints (i.e. exterior or comer joints on the perimeter of the stmcture in some cases, where frames are only in one of the plan directions, they could be also interior). The typical joint failures observed in the L Aquila post earthquake are described and a local strengthening procedure by means of FRP, steel jacketing or CAM technique is discussed. 

Furthermore, an orthogonal beam stub has been designed in order to represent a typical comer joint (Fig. 14.4a). The longitudinal reinforcement of this beam was designed considering the actions provided by the external infill only (3( )16 on the top side and 2c )16 on the bottom side). Both beam and column have ( )8 stiirups spaced at 200 mm (a lower spacing has been adopted in the load application zones). 

Joints are unconflned on at least one (waU joints) or two (comer joints) sides... 

Joints and columns are more subjected to the thmst action of curtain walls, especially on the comer joints, where thmst is not compensated by the presence of a curtain waU on the opposite side... 

The most critical beam-column joints are those non-confined that is, typically those located on the structure perimeter or at the comer (comer joint), or on the facade (intermediate joint).

If the joint movement amounts to 15—35% of the total joint width, a shouldow sealant depth in a wide joint will minimize stress on the sealant and on its adhesive bond to the substrate (this apphes to expansion, butt, capping, and some floor, lap, and comer joints). 

The values of y for joint shear strength calculation are presented in Table 1. To investigate the relevance of the strength reconunendations in ASCE 41, Park and Mosalam (2012) collected 62 previous unreinforced exterior or comer joint test data. The evaluation of the joint shear... 

Finally, configurations are recommended for various types of joints butt joints, lap joints, reinforcements, T joints, and comer joints. The philosophy behind all the designs is to spread the load over a large area and decrease the peel stresses.
