Starburst polyamidoamine (PAMAM) synthesis [2, 77-81, 83] may begin with either a nucleophilic or an electrophilic core. In the case of nucleophilic cores such as ammonia or amine, step A in Scheme 21 involves exhaustive Michael addition to methyl acrylate. This addition occurs very rapidly and in high yield with essentially complete selectively and no amidation at room temperature. Step B requires addition of this triester intermediate to a large excess of ethylenediamine at room temperature to produce the terminal triamine core cell shown in Fig. 2 and Scheme 21. Repeating the sequence of steps A and B leads, via a hexaester... [Pg.254]

Poly(ethylenimine) (PEI) has been examined extensively both in its classical, random branched topology [125] and in its linear form [126]. The various architectural and topological forms of PEI have been reviewed recently [127], Here we describe the first example of this polymer system as an ideal, hyper-branched molecular assembly. Synthesis of a tri-dendron poly(ethyleneimine) dendrimer derived from an ammonia core involved, first the selective alkylation of diethylenetriamine (DETA) with aziridine to produce a symmetrical core cell, namely tris-(-2-aminoethyl)amine. Subsequent exhaustive alkylations of the terminal amino moieties with activated aziridines [2, 127, 128], such as IV-tosyl- or N-mesylaziridine gave very good conversions to the first-generation protected... [Pg.256]

Standard synthetic methods are used to couple partially protected penta-erythritol to the core cell and subsequent dendrimer surfaces [82, 133]. Synthesis of the first generation involves displacement of bromide from C(CH2Br)4 with a masked pentaerythritol (bicyclic orthoester). One obtains three hydroxyl groups per terminal group after deprotection (Scheme 24). Therefore, a series that triples both its surface hydroxyl groups and its molar mass is obtained (see Table 5). [Pg.262]

As previously mentioned (see also Fig. 3), the initiator core/core cell acts as the primary template which permits the introduction of very important molecular information (size, shape, multiplicity [Nc]) and specific function. For example, introduction of a specific function such as a chromophore [2] or metal chelator [132] in the initiator core represents stored information which will become buried... [Pg.279]

The life-limiting increase of resistance and decrease of capacity of cycled cells is usually attributed to the deteriorating effects of corrosion of the positive current collector— the cell container in the case of sodium core cells or a rod in the case of sulfur core cells. Apart from consuming the active material, corrosion may lead to the deposition of poorly conductive layers at the current collector surface, thus interrupting the contact of the inert electrode fibers with the current collector. Corrosion products may also deposit and block both the solid electrolyte and the electrode surface. The thermodynamic instability of metals in polysulfide melts severely limits the choice of materials interfacing the sulfur electrode.A fully satisfactory solution has not yet been reported. [Pg.415]

Cell projection lithography incorporates elements of image projection into the variable-shaped beam approach. Here, the shaped beam is created by an aperture, formed from single-crystal silicon, containing various shapes coinciding with the array of each unit cell of an integrated circuit device pattern such as the repetitive core cells of memory chips. ... [Pg.753]

The preparation of cross sections for control rod absorbers requires a special treatment due to the very high coupling of the heterogeneous control rod structure to the surrounding core cells. The method used is the reactivity equivalence method [9] which has been validated on the BALZAC IH experiments performed in the MASURCA zero-power critical mock-up in Cadarache [9]. This method uses the Sn transport option of the BISTRO code and its associated perturbation modules. The validity of such an approach for control rods has been evaluated not only for the reactivity variation of the control rod but also for the absorption rates in the control rod and the surrounding core regions. [Pg.233]
