Copper filings

Aerosol-Based Direct Fluorination. A technology that works on Hter and half-Hter quantities has been introduced (40—42). This new aerosol technique, which functions on principles similar to LaMar direct fluorination (Fig. 5), uses fine aerosol particle surfaces rather than copper filings to maintain a high surface area for direct fluorination. The aerosol direct fluorination technique has been shown to be effective for the synthesis of bicycHc perfluorocarbon such as perfluoroadamantane, perfluoroketones, perfluoroethers, and highly branched perfluorocarbons. 

In the 1970s, fluorination of volatile ethers, esters and acid fluorides was accomplished in reasonable yield using the same copper filing packed surface multizone reactor for such fluo-rinations (Table 3).18...

Oxides of Copper—red oxide of copper—Cu, 0—is prepared by heating one hundred parts of blue vitriol with fifty-seven parts of carbonate of soda until the water of crystallization Is expelled. The rosiduum is afterwards mixed with twenty-five parts of copper filings, and the mixture finely stamped into a crucible. It iB then exposed to a white boat for about twenty minutes, and after cooling and pulverization, the mass is well washed with water. ThiB process yields about fifty parts of fine colored red oxide of copper. 

Davy found that he could reproduce the blue glass above mentioned by fusing together fifteen parts of sodium carbonate, twenty parts powdered flint and three of copper filings. This is of interest in connection with a statement of Vitruvius to which reference will be made later.

Either reduced copper or fine copper filings may be used. 

Another method consists in boiling a solution of ferric nitrate with copper filings or zinc dust. The ferric nitrate need not be specially isolated for the purpose, but may be made merely as an intermediate product during the course of the reaction—if, for example, iron filings containing copper are treated with concentrated nitric acid. After dilution and filtration, the solution is dialysed, whereby a deep red liquid is obtained, containing colloidal ferric hydroxide.1... 

LAPIS CALCIS — i.e.. Recrement of Copper, Copper Filing, or Slag. 

A heated glass column filled with copper filings was introduced in the early days of anaerobic research. The idea is to remove residual oxygen from the gas stream as it oxidizes the copper filings. The quality of industrial grade CO2 is very high, and in our opinion does not require additional reduction.
