The CASS Test. In the copper-accelerated acetic acid salt spray (CASS) test (42), the positioning of the test surface is restricted to 15 2°, and the salt fog corrosivity is increased by increasing temperature and acidity, pH about 3.2, along with the addition of cupric chloride dihydrate. The CASS test is used extensively by the U.S. automobile industry for decorative nickel—chromium deposits, but is not common for other deposits or industries. Exposure cycle requirements are usually 22 hours, rarely more than 44 hours. Another corrosion test, now decreasing in use, for decorative nickel—chromium finishes is the Corrodkote test (43). This test utilizes a specific corrosive paste combined with a warm humidity cabinet test. Test cycles are usually 20 hours. [Pg.151]

Copper(ll) oxide and copper(ll) chloride dihydrate were purchased from Acros Chimica and used without further purification. The checkers found that the yield of Step C was substantially reduced (64-65%) when an old bottle of CuO was used. Results identical to those reported by the submitters were obtained using a new bottle of this reagent. [Pg.84]

The planar configuration of quadricovalent copper(Il) was discovered by Cox and Webster21 in the compounds of copper with 0-dike-tones (copper disalicyl ldoxime, copper acetylacetonate, copper ben-zoylacetonate, the copper salt of dipropionylmethane) and by Tunell, Posnjak, and Ksanda22 in the mineral tenorite, CuO. In crystalline cupric chloride dihydrate (Fig. 5-9) there are molecules with the planar configuration23... [Pg.158]

All chemicals used in the work were reagent grade, including imidazole (Aldrich Chemical), absolute ethanol (Aldrich), and copper(II) chloride dihydrate (Alfa Aesar), and they were used without further purification. [Pg.33]

It is very important to know whether a compound exists as a hydrate. For example, if a chemical reaction calls for 0.25 mol of copper(II) chloride, you need to know whether you are dealing with anhydrous copper(II) chloride or with copper(II) chloride dihydrate, shown in Figure 6.10. The mass of 0.25 mol of CuCl2 is 33.61 g. The mass of 0.25 mol of CuC12-2H20 is 38.11 g. [Pg.223]

The original literature2 suggests that copper(II) chloride dihydrate can be used as a catalyst, since it is reduced by the sulfur dioxide to copper(I). It has been noted on several occasions that cataiytically inactive mixtures result. If copper(II) chloride dihydrate is used, it is expedient to add copper(I) chloride (lg) to ensure efficient catalysis in the early stages of the reaction. [Pg.137]

Lewis acids can also be exploited for the cleavage of isopropylidene derivatives. One of the mildest examples comes from a synthesis of Lankacidin in which cleavage of an isopropylidene acetal without harm to a p-methoxybenzyl ether was effected with copper(Il) chloride dihydrate in methanol at reflux [Scheme 3.11].13 Alternatively, zinc(II) nitrate hexahydrate in acetonitrile at 50 DC can be used in which case even a primary tert-butyldimethylsilyl ether survives [Scheme 3.12].14 During a synthesis of Quinocarin, Katoh and co-workerscleaved an isopropylidene group using iron(IIT) chloride adsorbed onto silica gel [Scheme 3.13]. [Pg.130]

The CuCli-CuO promoted hydrolysis is not solely limited to thioacetals—a variety of acetals are also deprotected [21]. Treatment of 26 with the copper catalysts in acetone-water afforded the spiroacetals 27 and 28 via concomitant hydrolysis of the thioacetal and benzylidene dioxy and ethoxyethyl acetals (Sch. 7) [22], Copper(II) chloride dihydrate has also been shown to hydrolyze a variety of acetals [23] and trityl groups can also be removed in the presence of copper sulfate in benzene to afford deprotected alcohols [24]. [Pg.547]

Consider the case of cupric chloride. Under many circumstances of a general nature, such as reactions using solutions of the compound, the name cupric chloride or, better still, copper dichloride suffices. If referring especially to the hydrated solid salt, either cupric chloride dihydrate or copper dichloride dihydrate is used. The full structure of the crystalline hydrated chloride is known, and if matters involving this structure were being dealt with, then the full name should be given as frans-copper dichloride dihydrate H20 Cl... [Pg.7]
