Figure 6.25 shows the responses to ramped changes of +10.4 K and —12.1 K in the setpoint of the peak temperature controller 7peak. Production rate is changed by 25%, which indicates that the peak temperature provides an effective production rate handle in the cooled reactor system. 

The stainless steel gas/vacuum handling system used for this work facilitates a base pressure of 5x10 Torr (1 Torr = 133.3 Pa). It is equipped with a f-Nj cooled zeolite sorption pump, a 30 L/s ion pump, a BARATRON capacitance manometer (0.001-1000 Torr), and a model MIOOM DYCOR quadrupole mass spectrometer. 

Air handling systems, including air ducts, ancillary components, humidifiers and cooling towers should be inspected and maintained in accordance with Australian Standard AS3666-1989 Air Handling and Water Systems of Buildings—Microbial Control. 

Add ice slabs (if available from nearby units) for chilled/cooling water system if it is required to immediately control the temperatore in a vessel handling inflammable/toxic vapours and there is a breakdown in the existing refrigeration system. This is a costly method—but it may be able to prevent an accident in the plant. 

Other existing facilities such as water treatment, main transformer and electrical cables, bus bars, motor control centre, cooling tower and chilling plants, fuel storages and handling systems, fuel burners, boilers, and material handling systems such as screw conveyors and bucket elevators will also have to operate at increased load. 

Refueling differences exist between sodium-cooled reactors and the AHTR. For the AHTR, refueling temperatures are somewhat higher, the fuel geometry is different, the power density of the prismatic-block fuel-type SNF is 1 to 2 orders of magnitude lower, the vapor pressures of the liquid salts are much lower than those of sodium, and the liquid salt is transparent whereas the sodium is opaque. This section provides discussions of design considerations for the LS-VHTR fuel-handling system relative to sodium-cooled fast reactors.
