After a-helices, P-sheets are the most prominent secondary structure feature in globular proteins. However, the most widely used tool for secondary analysis, ultraviolet ECD, is so dominated by its sensitivity to the a-helix that, at best, it can only poorly characterize ( -sheet content. IR on the other hand has a good differential sensitivity to the p-sheet because of the large frequency shift ( 30 cm-1) from the helical band and because the extinction coefficient for model extended sheets is often higher than for other conformations. However, study of the p-sheet conformation with peptide models has long been hindered by their natural tendency to aggregate. Furthermore, no (or very few) peptide models of parallel sheets are available, to our knowledge. [Pg.728]

By employing the above subsystems, the production planning system has to be informed in real time about the availability of tools in stock as well as about the current contents of the tool magazines of the machine tools (in the case of FASs the robot hands in the end-of-arm-tool magazines) otherwise it will not be able to generate a proper production schedule. [Pg.168]

A workman now descends into the famace and empties it of its charcoal, by taking the pieces up one by one, using os much precaution as possible that they are not broken. The smaller fragmenta and charcoal dust are removed with a shovel, and collected in a heap together, Should the contents not he thoroughly cooled, the workman employs an iron tool which protects his hands from tlie lioat. Any Uye or half-burned charcoal which may be present is assorted by itself then spread out and occasionally rolled about, by which it... [Pg.53]

Provided the natural production of 5TU is the only source of tritium in the groundwater, we would have at hand a water dating tool. For example, water pumped from a well with 3TU has preserved 3 x 100/5 = 60% of its natural tritium content, equivalent to an age of 9 years (readable from Fig. 10.1). However, a hydrologist s life is not that simple. Most aquifers have a capacity equal to several annual recharges, or, in other words, water accumulates in the aquifer for many years and the age we have just calculated from the tritium concentration is not a real age, but rather an... [Pg.211]

In addition, however, to the expected and nonspecific effect of the reduced muscle mass, there may be, in muscular dystrophy, an inability of the remaining muscles to hold creatine to a normal degree (F4) in Duchenne or fascioscapulohumeral dystrophy, but not in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, there was a more rapid fall in the specific activity of urinary creatinine after the administration of creatine- C. Dystrophic mouse muscle contains a reduced amount of creatine (F5), and this animal provides a convenient tool for investigating any abnormalities in the handing of creatine by dystrophic muscle. Recent studies by Fitch and Rahmanian (F3) showed that entry of creatine- C into isolated skeletal muscle preparations was accelerated in the dystrophic mouse, thus implying that the low creatine content of the dystrophic muscle is due to a more rapid loss of this compound. From further work (F2), the authors concluded that this is due not to an increased membrane permeability to creatine, but to an impaired exchange between creatine with access to the membrane and creatine in a relatively inaccessible form. [Pg.433]

Currently, hand-held probes, metal detectors, trained dogs, and mechanical breaching equipment are considered the most effective tools to detect and/or clear landmines and other UXO. These methods are slow, costly, and labor-intensive. They mainly find landmines at or near the surface, although some metal detectors can find larger, more deeply buried UXO items because of their greater metal content. [Pg.190]
