Synthetic fluids are safe, noncorrosive, essentially nontoxic, and thermally stable when operated under conditions recommended by the manufacturers. Generally, these fluids are more expensive than petroleum oils, but the synthetics can usually be reprocessed to remove degradation products. There are several classes of chemicals offered permitting a wide temperature range of appHcation. Any heat-transfer fluid in use should be examined periodically to monitor degradation or contamination. [Pg.504]

Plastics and Elastomers. Common plastics and elastomers (qv) show exceUent resistance to hydrochloric acid within the temperature limits of the materials. Soft natural mbber compounds have been used for many years as liners for concentrated hydrochloric acid storage tanks up to a temperature of 60°C (see Rubber, natural). The term oil includes a variety of liquid or easily liquefiable, unctuous, combustible substances that are soluble in ether but not in water and that leave a greasy stain on paper and cloth. These substances can include animal, vegetable, and synthetic oils, but usually the word oil refers to a mineral oil produced from petroleum (qv). An oil that has been used or contaminated, or both, but not consumed, can often be recycled to regain a useful material, regardless of its origin. Although vitreous siUca is a simple, single-component glass, its properties can vary significantly, depending on thermal history, the type and concentration of defects, and impurities. Vitreous siUca can, however, be one of the purest commercially available glassy materials. Until the 1970s the chemical used as the impregnating and dielectric medium for capacitor units was PCB (polychlorinated biphenyl) liquid. It was found to be toxic and unsafe for humans as well as contamination of the environment. For this reason, it is no longer used. The latest trend is to use a non-PCB, non-toxic, phenyl xylyl ethane (PXE-oil), which is a synthetic dielectric liquid of extremely low loss for insulation and impregnation of the capacitor elements or to use mixed polypropylene or allpolypropylene (PP) liquids as the dielectric. Use of DMF as a solvent for the oxidation of l-o1efins has been reported by Clement and Selwitz. The method requires only a catalytic amount of PdCl2 and gives satisfactory yields under mild conditions. A small amount of olefin migration product is the only noticeable contaminant in the cases reported. The procedure can be applied satisfactorily to various 1-olefins with other functional groups. This useful synthetic method for the preparation of methyl ketones has been applied extensively in the syntheses of natural products such as steroids,macrolides, dihydrojasmone, and muscone. Lubrication skid. The gas turbine lubrication skid is usually independent of the steam turbine skid as the lubrication oil is usually synthetic due to the high temperatures in the gas turbine. Another reason is due to water contamination of the lubrication oil from the steam turbine. It is advisable to have the lubrication system be totally independent. The gas turbine lubrication skid would report to the gas turbine controller. Since the lubrication system is also used for providing cooling, it is usually operated for about 20 minutes after the gas turbine is shutdown. The lubrication skid contains at least three pumps, two pumps in which each can provide the head required and a third pump, which is usually recommended to be a DC drive for emergency use. These pumps and their control fall under the drive level hierarchy. [Pg.638]

Passive perimeter gas control systems are designed to alter the path of contaminant flow through the use of trenches or wells, and typically include synthetic flexible membrane liners (FMLs) and/or natural clays as containment materials. The membrane is held in place by a backfilled trench, the depth of which is determined by the distance to a limiting structure, such as groundwater or bedrock.
