In rabbits under light amytal anesthesia, chlordan has no direcr effect on the blood pressure, but produces a type of respiration having many characteristics in common with Cheyne-Stokes type. The generalized tremors, opisthotonus, tonic and clonic convulsions, produced by chlordan were decreased or abolished and respiration restored to normal by suitable injections of the sodium salts of amytal, phenobarbital, and pentothal. The LD60 of chlordan, which was about 20 mg. per kg. on intravenous administration to intact rabbits, was increased to about 60 mg. per kg. through the antidotal action of the barbiturates. An unidentified chlorine-containing degradation product with acidic properties was recovered from the urine of rabbits treated with chlordan. Approximately one third of its chlorine content was set free on hydrolysis at 100° C. with sodium hydroxide in either absolute alcohol or in water. [Pg.228]

Residual fuel oils and heavy marine fuels are composed of high-boiling-petroleum fractions, gas oils and cracked components. Residual and clarified oil streams from the FCC process can contain degraded alumina/silica catalyst fines. These 20- to 70-micron-diameter fines are known to contribute to a variety of problems in fuel injection and combustion systems. In marine engines, excessive injector pump wear, piston ring wear, and cylinder wall wear can all be due to the abrasive action of catalyst fines on these fuel system parts. [Pg.108]

Many biological cells contain degradative enzymes (proteases) that catalyze the hydrolysis of peptide linkages. In the intact cell, functional proteins are protected from these destructive enzymes because the enzymes are stored in cell organelles (lysosomes, etc.) and released only when needed. The proteases are freed upon cell disruption and immediately begin to catalyze the degradation of protein material. This detrimental action can be slowed by the addition of specific protease inhibitors such as phenylmethyl-sulfonyl fluoride or certain bioactive peptides. Recently, a nonspecific enzyme capable of degrading the precursor was extracted from Navel orange albedo (63). Lysosomes contain degradative enzymes that hydrolyze unwanted cellular molecules. Lysosomal enzymes reach the lysosomes via the Golgi. In the case of some lysosomal hydrolases, the Golgi adds a specific sugar residue, mannose-6-phosphate, to the enzymes which acts as a marker for lysosomal transport.
