Container coating epoxies

Tanl . Coatings for Hquid cargo tanks ate selected according to the materials that the tanks (qv) ate to contain. Tank coatings protect the cargo from contamination and must be compatible with the material carried. Epoxy systems ate most frequendy selected because they perform well with both aqueous and organic products. A carefully appHed three-coat epoxy system having a dry-film thickness of 225—300 pm can be expected to last for 12 years. 

A waterborne system for container coatings was developed based on a graft copolymerization of an advanced epoxy resin and an acryHc (52). The acryhc-vinyl monomers are grafted onto preformed epoxy resins in the presence of a free-radical initiator grafting occurs mainly at the methylene group of the aHphatic backbone on the epoxy resin. The polymeric product is a mixture of methacrylic acid—styrene copolymer, soHd epoxy resin, and graft copolymer of the unsaturated monomers onto the epoxy resin backbone. It is dispersible in water upon neutralization with an amine before cure with an amino—formaldehyde resin. 

It has been shown clearly, that in gaps, which are mostly the starting point of a far reaching corrosion, the polyaniline-containing coating act as a noble metal. In contrast to a well established zinc powder primer with an epoxy top coating, a structure of polyaniline-primer and epoxy top coat, had perfectly fulfilled the demands of the tests (see Figure 11.59).

The choice of amino component depends on the end use. Butylated UF resins are principally used in low-temperature curing applications, such as wood and general industrial coatings. Small amounts of these resins are also employed in container coatings in combination with epoxy resins. With the development of high-solids coatings, urea resins have been replaced in many applications with HMMM-type resins.
