Contact prevention strategies

Beeause Salmonella spp. are ubiquitous, transmission can occur through contact with soil, wild birds, rodents, insects, pet animals, and water. In humans, a simple handshake ean spread the bacterium. Feed (figure 1) is always a main suspect, since ingredients are harvested with little regard to possible eontamination by wildlife. In recent years, concerns have been raised because many strains of Salmonella spp. have become resistant to several of the antibiotics traditionally used for treatment, in both animals and humans. An effective prevention strategy is required to limit exposure to this pathogen on the farm. It is necessary to monitor animals, visitors, equipment. 

Grazing management strategies aim to reduce the contact of hosts to infectious GIN larvae on pasture. They can be divided into three categories (Barger, 1997) the preventive procedure, evasive grazing and dilusive grazing.

Thus, for logical or illogical reasons (perhaps even for commercial reasons), our hypothetical research team decided that, while it likes the use of the EO/PO polymer extraction technique, it wants to develop an alternative, but related, method. These are three general control principles utilized in reducing the exposure of workers to occupational health hazards. These involve source controls, transmission barriers, and personal protection. In the first strategy, measures are taken to prevent the release of the toxic contaminant to the air. The second strategy provides means for capturing or blocking the contaminant before it reaches the worker. The final strategy assumes the first two were unsuccessful and requires workers to wear some protective device to prevent contact with the toxic contaminant. 

Specifically, the ACIP has recommended that each state and territory establish and maintain at least one smallpox response team of vaccinated individuals. Having such smallpox response teams fits with the primary strategy to control a smallpox outbreak through surveillance and containment, which includes case isolation and vaccination of persons at risk for exposure. This strategy, which proved effective in eradicating naturally occurring smallpox, includes identification of cases through intensive surveillance, isolation of cases to prevent further transmission, vaccination of primary contacts (household contacts and other close contacts of cases) and vaccination of secondary contacts (close contacts of the primary contacts) (32).
