Standards also give definitions for the characteristics of a material or product, or they provide the means and methods to implement quality tests for them. The difference lies in their method of preparation, therefore, in their legal status. A standard is the result of a consensus between all parties concerned. These parties represent the manufacturers of the product or material, the consumers who are the industries or user services or, ultimately, consumer associations, as well as, finally, governments. [Pg.294]

A study of the perceived trustworthiness of different sources of information about food safety was reported in the Eurobarometer (1998). It indicated the trust in consumer associations was the highest, followed by national authorities. Overall, sources of information about food safety were least trusted from producers, companies, and market venders. Following is the percentage of respondents perceiving each of the information sources as completely trustworthy ... [Pg.112]

The three key fruit quality traits, color, heat, and flavor, are independent characteristics. The color of a fruit does not predict the hotness, despite many consumers associating green peppers with no-heat bell peppers and red powder with hot cayenne chile. Hence in New Mexico, the state question is Red or Green to determine which version of the host s salsa or enchilada is hotter. From a phytochemical perspective the independence of these traits relates to the biosynthetic pathways for these compounds and the genes for both the structural and regulatory genes for those pathways. This review describes some of the recent advances in the analyses of the compounds, enzymes, and genes associated with color and flavor in Capsicum. [Pg.110]

The Market Practices Act provides for several remedies or sanctions depending on the nature of the violation. Misleading advertisements and special offers carry a sanction of both prohibitive injunction (subject to fines upon non-compliance), market disruption fees between SEK5000 and SEK5000 000 and third party damages, whereas in cases of violation of the general clause on unfair marketing only prohibitive injunction is available. The Consumer Ombudsman, a competitor or a trade or consumer association can initiate actions. [Pg.31]

Increase in starch crystallinity is often considered as the most straight forward way of understanding the changes that take place in bread during storage. The consumer associates the softness of bread with freshness. Keeping bread softer for longer will increase the pre- and post-sale shelf-life of the product. [Pg.343]

The choice is clear. The issue of consumer protection must not be understood as a means to prevent the consumer to be informed and to make an informed choice [2] "Shall we let Sound Science decide the safety of irradiated food " [23]. Now the ball for acceptance by the public is in the court of policy and health authorities but also in the court of consumers associations... [Pg.173]

This has emerged as a key issue as the concept of environmental reporting has developed. The basic need for it stems from the lack of trust that many stakeholders have in information published by companies. Environmental groups are identified as most likely to give the truth about the state of the environment. Scientists and consumer associations are ranked in second and third place, respectively. Industry is placed at the bottom of the league, emphasising the lack of public trust in judging industry performance. This clearly confirms why it is necessary to verify CERs in order to increase credibility of the data and the document as a whole. [Pg.14]
