Another approach is increasing throughput via a monolith analytical column. Vintiloiu et al. (2005) used a self-made RAM online SPE under turbulent flow conditions to measure rofecoxib, a cyclooxygenase-2 inhibitor, in rat plasma. Another potential material for cell construction purposes is nickel. For instance, Eka Chemicals has employed nickel cartridges with standard GORE-TEX membranes to remove graphite particles directly from a caustic decomposer. The result was promising. Not only was the graphite removed but the quantities of mercury were reduced to levels of <10 pg. Aside from the cleaner caustic, the volume of sludge was drastically reduced since no pre-coat was required in this procedure.

Oxyliquit, invented by Linde, consisted of liquid air (or oxygen) absorbed in wadding, charcoal or other org material. As these mixts were hard to detonate, kieselguhr was substituted as absorbent with an addn of petroleum. It was inconvenient to use, as the cartridge had to be fired within 5 to 15 mins of its prepn. It was tried in Austria and used in construction of the Simplon tunnel (Ref 11, p 44)...
