The Congress of the United States enacts laws and appropriates money. Members of both the House of Representatives and the Senate propose bills and act on them. When approved by Congress and signed by the president, the bills become the law of the land. Many of the laws intend to protect the public and provide for their health and safety. 

An act may also have a name as part of the provisions of the act. An example is the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. Some acts also have the names of the two individuals who sponsored them as a bill or draft law in Congress. There is one person from each legislative body the House of Representatives and the Senate. For example, the OSH Act of 1970 is also called the Williams-Steiger Act.
