Configuration item

Configuration control may be defined as an element of configuration management, consisting of the evaluation, coordination, approval or disapproval, and implementation of changes to configuration items after formal establishment of their configuration identification (IEEE 610.12-1990). 

Documentation showing the status and history of configuration items should be maintained. Such documentation may include details of changes made, with the latest version and release identifiers.

Each hardware and software component of the infrastructure may be defined as a configuration item.
