Conductivity basics

In order to conduct basic research and address the need for reagents and standards, several cell lines have been modified to express individual transporters. These can serve as a source of active protein to validate a chemical as a substrate or inhibitor, or as a source of protein to validate the specificity of an antibody. In order for this approach to be sufficiently robust to establish specificity (and to minimize false-negative findings), all of the key proteins need to be available and active in the system. However, as specific probes are being increasingly identified and developed, valuable mechanistic studies can be performed with the transporters and substrates/inhibitors that are currently available. [Pg.330]

The Max Planck Society for the Advancement of the Sciences (MPS) is an independent, non-profit research organization. It was established on February 26, 1948, as the successor organization of the former Kaiser Wilhelm Society. Max Planck Institutes conduct basic research in service to the general public in the areas of natural science, social science and the arts and humanities. [Pg.6]

Governments assist in the acquisition of information by funding and conducting basic research. Under command-and-control regulation, however, government agencies also use information to set behavior standards. [Pg.46]

Whaf are the consequences of exposure Basic epidemiological information has classic public-good attributes. Those who conduct basic research have difficulty restricting its consumption to those who contributed to the research costs. But once it is developed, private markets disseminate the knowledge through newspapers, magazines, and even television. [Pg.68]

EMBL was founded with a four-fold mission to conduct basic research r) molecular biology, to provide essential services to scientists in its Member States, to provide high-level training to its staff, students, and visitors, and to develop new instrumentation for biological research. These core functions are combined with significant outreach activities m the areas of technology transfer, science and society and training for science teachers. [Pg.501]

From several points of view (for example, in battery technology), it is extremely important to have solutions of maximum specific conductivity. Basically, the specific conductivity increases proportionally to the concentration of ions. On this simplistic ground, it would seem important to have as high a concentration as possible up to the solubility limits. However (see the work of Haymet described in Chapter 3), increasing concentration leads to an inaease of ionic association which decreases the concentration of conducting entities. Also, as... [Pg.598]

Academic institutions account for 21% of all employed toxicologists. Most have advanced degrees and are conducting basic research. There has been an increase in the number of programs in toxicology at many academic institutions because of a need for... [Pg.2752]

Given the widespread use of CAM practices and products and the lack of private sector investment to prove their safety and efficacy, the responsibility to do so fell to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In 1998, the NCCAM was created by Congress as a component of the NIH to conduct basic and applied research... [Pg.472]

Government Industries Research Institute, Osaka (GIRIO), Japan, conducted basic research on MCFC components during the past two decades. Currently, Fuel Cell Energy (FCE), U.S.A., MTU Fiiedrichshafen, Ansaldo, Italy, and Ishikawajima-Harima Heavy... [Pg.1750]

Bmce Garrett received a Ph.D. in chemistry in 1977 from the University of California, Berkeley with W.H. Miller. He was a postdoctoral research specialist at the University of Minnesota with D.G. Truhlar (1977-1979) before joining the scientihc staff at Battelle Columbus Laboratories. He co-founded Chemical Dynamics Corporation, a contract research organization, where he conducted basic research from 1980 to 1989. He is currently Laboratory Fellow and Associate Director for Molecular Interactions Transformation in the Chemical Sciences Division at Pacihc Northwest National Laboratory. His hrst computational studies in 1972 involved kinetic Monte Carlo simulations with D.L. Bunker as an Undergraduate Research Assistant at the University of California, Irvine, and resulted in his hrst TACC publication in 1974. [Pg.1233]

X rays were discovered by scientists who were conducting basic research on electrical discharge through gases. Later, it was discovered that X rays could be used to diagnose medical problems. [Pg.17]

The ECE department of another University in Ethiopia used the Mobile Studio Board to expand the laboratory equipment used in sophomore and junior level coinses. Prior to the availability of the MSIOBoards, students were forced to work in groups of 10-20 students to conduct basic ECE laboratory experiments (Fig. 10.7, leftside). The addition of ten new Mobile Studio Board allowed the ECE department to triple its laboratory workstation benches and accommodate fewer students (4-5) per station to conduct their laboratory experiments (Fig. 10.7, right side). [Pg.253]
