PPARy activation in adipose tissue would be expected to result in an activation of adipocyte differentiation, as has been demonstrated in vitro. - Thrrs, htrmarts treated with pioglitazone worrld be expected to demonstrate an increase in adipocyte differentiation, which worrld lead to a potential increase in adipose tissue hpid. The mechanism of this increase in differentiation may be a direct effect of stimrrlation of adipogenesis from preadipocytes, or it may be due to a thiazolidinedione-induced decrease in inflammatory cytokine expression by macrophages. As a result of a thiazohdinedione-mediated increase in lipid accumttlation in adipose tissue, there may be a diversion of dietary lipid into adipose tissue and away from other organs that are more susceptible to lipotoxicity, such as muscle, islets, and liver. Thus, the increase in adipose tissue lipid may, in effect, steal lipid from other organs, such as islets and muscle, which are crucial comptonents of glucose homeostasis. [Pg.90]

This methodology can be used to calibrate potentials if the assumption is adopted that the FcIFc couple is unaffected by solution. However, there are a number of issues that can prevent the calibration process. First, in some IL systems ferrocene has been reported to not have ideal electrochemistry or indeed chemically react with IL components [13, 46]. In a scenario such as this, use of the FcIFc" couple is not recommended for calibration purposes. Second, the effect of solvation on Fc may not be negligible and may cause a shift in potentials [45]. Therefore, the assumption that the FcIFc couple is unaffected by solution may not be accurate. Consequently, prior to use of Fc its electrochemistry should be explored in detail to determine if it can be used within the IL system under investigation. A much more serious issue has been explored by Compton and co-workers. This group... [Pg.206]
