Compounded Pellets

After compounding, the mixture has to be formed into usable-sized pellets, suitable for further processing. The pellets must be uniform in size and smooth so that they are easy to pour and handle. Compounded pellets are typically approximately the size of a grain of wheat with shapes ranging from spherical to cylindrical. 

The final step in compounding involves taking the molten mixture of resin and additives, now called compound, and forming it into pellets. These pellets are typically conveyed to the converting equipment by pneumatic systems. To ensure that the material feeds into the converting equipment consistently, compounded pellets must be uniform in size, flow easily, and preferably have a smooth, slick surface. 

Why does the shape of compounded pellets differ between those created by underwater versus strand pelletization systems ... 

The addition of a very small amount of styrene-isoprene-styrene (SIS) triblock compatibilizer, introduced as a compounded pellet with PS 685, suppresses the shear flow-induced coalescence appreciably, as seen by comparing Fig. 11.35 with Fig. 11.37. On the other hand, there is no effect of this very small amount of SIS on the dispersion rate. 

In addition, for polymer blends, the ratio of melt viscosities r = r)dKp(.r< / of the blend partners has a major influence on the melting process. In this case, r dlspen is the viscosity of the blend partner present in the dispersed phase and r)rn is the viscosity of the blend partner present in the continuous phase. The smaller the value of r, the sooner the melting process begins, but also the longer it takes [9]. In unfavorable process conditions, as yet unplasticized particles may be encountered in the compounded pellets (see Fig. 4.5). 

Extruded compounded pellets were converted into strips (1 in. X 0.05 in.) using a % in. Brabender laboratory extruder. ASTM-D 638 Type I 0.05 0.005 in. tensile specimens were tensile cut from the extruded strips. Extrusion conditions used were typical for this class of materials. Extrusion take-off rates were controlled to minimize orientation in the extruded strips. Annealing experiments showed shrinkage to be approximately 2% in the longitudinal direction. 

All samples were prepared from a commercially available epoxy cresol novolac-phenol formaldehyde novolac-tertia-ry amine based molding compound. Pelletized preforms were heated to 85°C in a RF preheater prior to being transfer molded at 180°C/68 atm. for 90 sec. Molded samples were cooled in air to room temperature and stored in a desiccated environment until testing or subsequent thermal treatment. Post mold curing, PMC, was accomplished in a gravity oven at 175°C for a period of 4 hours. Samples without post mold curing are designated by NPMC. 

Compounded pellets are those that have been through an intermediate mixing extrusion to improve the properties of the first-generation polymer with additives such as colorants, stabilizers, and fillers. The compounding step gives these pellets an additional heat history, which should be considered as a potential effect on polymer degradation.

Several companies are compounding their formulations in-line instead of using already compounded pellets. This is especially true of European companies using compositions that include reinforcing fibres, because a greater fibre length becomes possible. 

As reported by Karian (1), a series of GFRP composites were compounded via a twin-screw extruder. Various levels of chopped short glass fibers were fed downstream via a side feeder. The melt extrudate was quenched in a water bath and strand pelletized. The compounded pellets were molded into ASTM tensile bars. The tensile bar specimens were used to measure tensile strength at 5 mm/ min crosshead speed. Small 5- to 20-mg samples were taken from the center cut of the molded tensile bars for DSC measurement of heat capacity versus temperature. 

Although extrusion is by far the most common processing method for WPC, the processors use a variety of extruder types and processing strategies [89]. Some processors run compounded pellets through single-screw extruders to form the final shape, others compound and extrude final shapes in one step using twin-screw extruders. 

If MDI is initially compounded with starch and 25% water, the dominant interaction would be expected to be between the MDI and water, due to the high free water content. In the current work, not only the gelatinized starch had a lower concentration of water ( 16%), but the water molecules may also have had reduced mobility if they were bound (via hydrogen bonding) to the numerous hydroxyl groups present in the starch. A small amount of bubbles due to NCO/H2O reaction were observed in the compounded pellets however, these were removed in the injection molding process [45]. 

Designed for use in polymer systems and compounds requiring dry blending or surface coating of the additive directly onto resin (or compound), pellets, powder, or beads. Its fine particle size allows for simplified dry blending of Pationic 909 with other polymer additives and ingredients.
