EXTRUSION MIXING

A specific attention has been paid to the mechanochemical generation of X in unsaturated elastomers, EPDM, ABS, PVC and polyolefins [243, 252]. This synthetical approach exploits processing operations producing free radicals. In situ chemical reactions can be performed during some important industrial processes like mastication of rubber and extrusion, mixing or reaction injection molding of plastics. 

This section presents various examples and applications of three-dimensional simulation using finite element and boundary element techniques. These are presented to offer the reader an idea of what is possible with the current state-of-the-art of simulation programs. As examples, the authors have chosen cases that are of great interest to the academic, as well as, the industrial research community. These are internal batch mixers, extrusion dies and extrusion mixing sections.

Compounding is achieved by extrusion, mixing, and melting in large heated mixers or by milling on a two-roD mill. Though the methods differ, the final product comes in the forms of pellets that are fed directly to the processing system.
