In the case of growth spirals originating from dislocations with large b, hollow cores with diameters of micrometer order are observed at the spiral center however, when a number of dislocations with small b concentrate in a narrow area, a basin-like depression appears at the central area of the composite spirals, since the curvature of advancement of the spiral steps is reversed near the center. A straight step may appear near the spiral center as an intermediate state in the reversal of step curvature. Several examples are shown in Fig. 5.11. [Pg.105]

With due regard to the lateral variations in composition which can arise as a consequence of source geometry and positioning (discussed in Section II), it is vise to analyze the alloy film at a number of representative points. For example, if a catalytic reaction was carried out over an alloy film deposited inside a spherical vessel maintained at a constant temperature over its entire area, then the mean alloy composition (and the uniformity of composition) is required. A convenient procedure is to cut glass reaction vessels carefully into pieces at the end of the experiment and to determine the composition by X-ray fluorescence analysis of a number of representative pieces. Compositions of Pd-Ag alloy films (40) determined at 12 representative parts of a spherical vessel from the intensities of the AgK 12 and PdKau fluorescent X-ray emissions are shown in Table V mean compositions are listed in the first column. Hose may be hand built using a three roll wrapping machine. The centres of the three rolls form an equilateral triangle. The hose during construction sits on the junction between the two lower rollers and pressure is exerted to consolidate the composite by the upper movable roller. An extruded inner liner, after fitting to a solid inner mandrel, is placed into the machine between the rollers and then the various layers of rubber coated or resorcinol-formaldehyde-latex treated, fabric are applied in a spiral form, with overlap. Once the reinforcement layers have been added the cover rubber is applied and a cloth, usually nylon, is spirally wrapped around the constructed hose using the roller system.
