Comparison or contrast

Organometallic complexes are known which contain a wide variety of macrocycles closely related to porphyrins corroles, porphycenes, tetraazaporphyrins. phthalocyanines, tetraazaannulenes, and porphyrinogens are the best known examples. Examples containing the first four of these macrocycles are included where there is a useful comparison or contrast with the relevant porphyrin chemistry, but the discussion will not be comprehensive. The four macrocycles are shown in Fig. 2. 

When you write a comparison or contrast essay, your opinion about the two elements in question becomes your thesis statement the body of the paper then shows why you arrived at that opinion. For example, if your thesis states that Mom s Kum-On-Back Hamburger Haven is preferable to McPhony s Mystery Burger Stand, your body paragraphs might contrast the two restaurants in terms of food, service, and atmosphere, revealing the superiority of Mom s on all three counts. 

There are two principal patterns of organization for comparison or contrast essays. For most short papers you should choose one of the patterns and stick with it throughout the essay. Later, if you are assigned a longer essay, you may want to mix the patterns for variety as some professional writers do, but do so only if you can maintain clarity and logical organization. 

The single most serious error is the so-what thesis. Writers of comparison and contrast essays often wish to convince their readers that something—a restaurant, a movie, a product—is better (or worse) than something else Mom s Haven is a better place to eat than McPhony s. But not all comparison or contrast essays assert the absolute superiority or inferiority of their subjects. Sometimes writers simply want to point out the similarities or differences in two or more people, places, or objects, and that s fine, too—as long as the writer avoids the so-what thesis problem.

It has long been known that thiolate ligands (RS ), which are formally derived from thiols (RSH) by deprotonation, are well suited to form metal complexes (1). Specific reviews of this area have covered the structural chemistry of metal thiolates (la), the coordination chemistry of metal thiolates from a bioinorganic perspective (lb), transition metal thiolates (lc), and, most recently, early transition metal thiolates (Id). Because of potential thione-thiol tautomerism, a review dealing with complexes of heterocylic thione donors (le) is also relevant. This chapter concentrates on thiolate complexes of copper , lithium, and magnesium, but we also mention, for comparison or contrast, many related species of silver and gold and of some complexes that contain selenolate and tellurolate ligands. However, it should be emphasized that we have not attempted a comprehensive literature search outside the primary field of interest.

Dose—response relationships are useful for many purposes in particular, the following if a positive dose—response relationship exists, then this is good evidence that exposure to the material under test is causally related to the response the quantitative information obtained gives an indication of the spread of sensitivity of the population at risk, and hence influences ha2ard evaluation the data may allow assessments of no effects and minimum effects doses, and hence may be valuable in assessing ha2ard and by appropriate considerations of the dose—response data, it is possible to make quantitative comparisons and contrasts between materials or between species. 

While the HVC/LVC dichotomy has rather routinely been taken for granted in the past, it has not been the subject of an explanatory discussion. There are five points of comparison and/or contrast to which I should like to draw attention four are empirical and one theoretical. 

On a separate sheet of paper or your computer, create an outline using comparison and contrast or problem solution as your organizing principle. Your outline can be formal or informal. Use one of your own brainstorms from Lesson 3 or 4, or one of the brainstorms provided as an example.

As you make these comparisons, or if you notice compare and contrast passages in what you read, practice arranging them in both point-by-point order (ABABAB) and in block order (AAABBB). 

Over the years, however, information has emerged that indicates that the shape of Fig. 2 may he a simplification or may be restricted to special circumstances. Of great importance has been the structural elucidation of large numbers of 5-coordinate complexes. The isolation of these compounds means that any closely related species encountered on the reaction coordinate could reasonably be regarded as intermediates and not transition states. The geometry of these compounds is therefore of great interest, and a structural survey of these types is worthwhile. At this stage we widen the scope to cover all the d ion complexes in order to make comparisons and contrasts with the reactions of palladium(II) and platinum(II) on which we have concentrated thus far. 

Sometimes a Restate situation resembles a Compare situation, and it is necessary to determine which one applies. In the Compare situation, the solver is not told which of two things has the greater or smaller value This determination is the goal of the comparison. In contrast, in the Restate situation, the solver is explicitly informed that one or the other is greater and is asked to determine the size of that difference. Thus, the first asks which one and the second asks how much more. ... 

Chemists with master s degrees can offer two kinds of bonuses to prospective employers. (1) One premium is experience. All or most of these scientists are experienced researchers who complete enough benchwork to have written a coherent thesis. Furthermore, some chemists research is successful and original enough to warrant one or more articles in chemistry journals. Master s-level chemists with research-based dissertations or published articles lay strong claims to positions in discovery or development groups. These writings help demonstrate chemists prowess and thereby facilitate the comparisons and contrasts of candidates that recruiters make. 

Predictable variations in the SOC pool have been observed in either comparative. studies between soils from contrasting climates (Jenny, 1961 Trumbore, 1993) or contrasting soil textural types (Parton et ai, 1987), transects along climatic gradients (Townsend et ai, 1995), transects acro.ss soil chrono/topo sequences (Goh ct ai, 1976 ), and comparisons between disturbed and undisturbed areas (Townsend et ai, 1995 Desjardin et ai, 1993). In addition, some studies have attempted to look at SOC trends on the continental (e.g., Spain et ai, 1983 Moraes et ai, 1995) or global (e.g., Post et ai, 1982) scale using data compiled from literature sources and have been able to deduce major trends in SOC inventories with respect to climate and soil type, but generally with much scatter in the data.
