Word prediction is another acceleration technique available from many sources. Based on previously selected letters and words, the system presents the user with best guess choices for completing the spelling of a word. The user then chooses one of the predictions or continues spelling, resulting in yet another set of predictions. Prediction systems have demonstrated a reduction in the number of keystrokes, but recent research [Koester and Levine, 1994] reports that the actual communication rate does not represent a statistical improvement over spelling. The reason for word predication s failure to improve rate is that increased time is needed to read and select the word table choices. The cost of discontinuity and increased cognitive load in the task seems to match the benefits of reduced keystrokes. [Pg.1185]

Tadoma is a method of communication used by a few people in the deaf-blind community and is of theoretical importance for the development of tactual auditory substitution devices. While sign language requires training by both sender and receiver, in Tadoma, the sender speaks normally. The trained receiver places his or her hands on the face and neck of the sender to monitor lip and jaw movements, airflow at the lips, and vibration of the neck (Reed et al., 1992). Experienced users achieve 80% keyword recognition of everyday speech at a rate of 3 syllables per second. Using no instrumentation, this is the highest speech communication rate recorded for any tactual-only communication system. [Pg.721]

Nucleation is a rate phenomenon therefore, even though the condition oc > c is necessary, it is nonetheless insufficient to bring about nucleus formation. An additional requirement must be satisfied. That is, in order for cluster formation to proceed to completion, the monomers that represent potential candidates for a given critical nucleus must be retained for a sufficiently long period of time within a volume of molecular dimensions. If intermicellar exchange proceeds extremely rapidly, then the candidate monomers will be redistributed before nucleation can occur. Individual demand for traffic safety partly depends on avoiding the payment of medical expenses which will result from a traffic accident. While some outlay of money and time can be expected with each accident the outlay may be less than the total accident-related medical expense because of community-rated health insurance premiums or public assistance-related third party financing such as Medicaid and Medicare. The potential shift of some medical costs to those not involved in an accident means that individual demand for traffic safety tends to be too low. Similarly the demand may be too low because of the lack of precise experience rating for automobile insurance and possibly incomplete compensation for damaged parties through the courts especially when time costs and death are involved. [Pg.32]
