In closing, anyone who met A.C. Richardson cannot have failed to have been endeared to him. He was a generous, humorous person with a warmth of spirit and a bonhomie that blessed all who knew him. As an eminent carbohydrate chemist, he made a long-lasting mark on the field. He will be sorely missed by all of his family and friends, and by the broader international scientific community. 

Standard 4 This standard demands a sense of humor—an ability to laugh at where you are, to see yourself in perspective. To qualify, individuals must consistently make a special effort to see the positive lighter side of life and communicate it to others. If you are considered good company, you probably have met this standard. If known as a positive force, you qualify. If you consistently make others laugh, you re setting a standard.

The interstices between the epithelial cell layers communicate directly by an aqueous pathway with the stroma and aqueous humor. Lipophilic drugs can readily enter the epithelium, because its barrier is composed of phospholipid membranes. Because the epithelium contains more than two-thirds of the plasma membrane mass of the cornea, it is the most significant storage depot for agents that readily partition into lipid media. The release rate of drugs from the epithelium depends on their tendency to reenter an aqueous phase.Thus, agents that are very lipophilic have a very long half-life once in the epithelium. 

This communication reports studies on the humoral antibacterial response in Drosophila and Ceratitis capitata, the Mediterranean fruit fly. The goal of our work is to understand the molecular mechanisms that protect flies from bacterial infection. To judge adequately whether communicative patterns have altered (and possibly improved) rather than deteriorated, the judge must function in the same d-ASC as the communicator. The degree to which an observer in a different d-SoC—for example, his ordinary d-SoC—can understand the same communication is interesting, but not a valid measure of the adequacy of the communication within the d-ASC. 

Communications mechanisms must be fast enough to enable the control system to respond in a timely manner. Humoral communications cannot be used for fast responses, and many unmyelinated nerve fibers are also too slow for many purposes. The organism that can transmit information and process it the fastest often has a survival and reproductive advantage therefore, some specialized communication means (such as nerve fibers in myelin sheathes) have developed. 

Although they are often diagrammed as straight lines or wires, communications systems are much more complex, and often display characteristics of a transmission line (Figure 4.4.2). Transmission lines have resistance, capacity, and inertia elements that slow and degrade a signal. This is true for both neural and humoral signals. 

This often humorous and delightful communication approach can be used for all stages of individual and organization development as long as examples of successes and blunders are diverse, relevant to your specific organization, free of stereotypes, and not offensive.
