In creating their plans, most communities draw on the Integrated Emergency Management System (IEMS) developed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).

Written Memos. One of the most effective devices for improving maintenance communications is a newsletter or internal memo. The memo s success depends heavily on communicating formal tips and techniques in the mechanics language and using photos, sketches, and drawings generously to get the message across.

As computer programs evolve they become easier to use. Modem programs often communicate with the user in terms of a graphical interface, and many methods have become essential black box procedures if you can draw the molecule, you can also do the calculation. This effectively means that you no longer have to be a highly trained theoretician to run even quite sophisticated calculations. 

Merger of the ALEE and the IRE in 1963 into the Institution of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) preseiwed in its name a sense of the earlier bifurcation of the profession, but in fact the lines had become quite blurred and the numerous constituent societies drew and continue to draw from both traditions. Photographs of the proposed site are useful and a site layout drawing is needed, but a perspective artistic impression showing buildings with architectural facades, vehicles and other site activities improves the presentation. Employing three-dimensional models discussed in Section 7.3 helps communication and allows layout options to be easily demonstrated and discussed. 

CADD, a part of CAD, is the computer-assisted generation of working drawings and other documents. The CADD user generates graphics by interactive communication with the computer. The graphics are displayed on a video terminal and can be converted into hard copy by a printer or plotter. 

Light wave technologies provide a number of special challenges for polymeric materials. Polymer fibers offer the best potential for optical communications in local area network (LAN) applications, because their large core size makes it relatively cheap to attach connectors to them. There is a need for polymer fibers that have low losses and that can transmit the bandwidths needed for LAN applications the aciylate and methacrylate polymers now under study have poor loss and bandwidth performance. Research on monomer purification, polymerization to precise molecular-size distributions, and weU-controlled drawing processes is relevant here. There is also a need for precision plastic molding processes for mass prodnction of optical fiber connectors and splice hardware. A tenfold reduction in the cost of fiber and related devices is necessaiy to make the utilization of optical fiber and related devices economical for local area networks and tlie telecommunications loop. 

In 1999 CambridgeSoft released a desktop/personal version of an e-notebook, specifically targeted at medicinal chemistry this incorporated reaction drawing and searching, automatic stoichiometry calculations, and simple procedure write-up using plain text. This system was adopted both by individuals, particularly in the academic community, and by small and mediumsized companies as an alternative to building an in-house hybrid system (Fig. 9.2). 

The biology of the histamine H3 receptor has been detailed in several recent reviews and will not be discussed in great detail here [1-4]. Rather, we intend to draw attention to the major new biological and medicinal chemistry insights that have emerged in the histamine H3 research community over the last couple of years.
