Mjrrh is an oleo gum resin obtained from the stem of Commiphora molmol, a tree that grows in north-east Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. In mice, myrrh showed no mutagenic effects and was a potent cytotoxic drug against solid tumor cells (5). The antitumor potential of C. molmol was comparable to that of cyclophosphamide. Studies in hamsters suggested an antischistosomal activity of myrrh (6). [Pg.1563]

With these two products available, we undertook the synthesis of (+)-1,2-dihydrotubipofhrane 431 [61], and also attempted the synthesis of the reported structure for the enantiomeric form of tubipofurane (436) and the reported structure for furanoeudesma-1,3-diene (441) [62]. Tubipofurane is a furanoeudesmane isolated from the stolonifer Tubipora musica, and it shows ichtiotoxicity against Orizias latipes. The 8-acetoxy derivative of tubipofurane is active against B-16 melanoma cells in vitro. Furanoeudesma-1,3-diene, on the other hand, has been isolated from Commiphora molmol and has been shown to have analgesic properties [63]. Oleo-gum-resin exudes from incisions made in bark of myrrh trees (family Burseraceae) in North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula— Commiphora molmol—and India—C. mukul— where it is known as guggul. The main constituents are resin 25-40%, gum 60%, volatile oil 2.5-8% along with a bitter principle. Its actions are antiseptic, antimicrobial, astringent and stimulant. [Pg.105]
