This was a great advance, as complex hydrocarbons of various kinds could be clearly named if their stmctures were known. The Geneva system, modified and expanded by subsequent Commissions, is used systematically in the fourth and fifth editions of Be /stem s Handbuch der Organischen Chemie (1), and as the basis of lUPAC nomenclature. In 1992 a commemorative symposium on the centennial anniversary of the Geneva Conference was held in Geneva (45). [Pg.118]

As a family of resins originally developed in the early twentieth century, the nature and potential of phenoHc resins have been explored thoroughly to produce an extensive body of technical Hterature (1 8). A symposium sponsored by the American Chemical Society commemorated 75 years of phenoHc resin chemistry in 1983 (9), and in 1987 the PhenoHc Mol ding Division of the Society of the Plastics Industry (SPI) sponsored a conference on phenoHcs in the twenty-first century (1). [Pg.292]

Yet when Max von Laue, in 1943, commemorated the centenary of Groth .s birth, he praised him for keeping alive the hypothesis of the space lattice which was languishing everywhere else in Germany, and added that without this hypothesis it w ould have been unlikely that X-ray diffraction would have been discovered and even if it had been, it would have been quite impossible to make sense of it. [Pg.70]

Fludd even mentioned the sacramental controversy over the Real Presence, instigated by Christ s words This is my body. In his response to Mersenne in the Clovis Philosophim. (1633) Fludd claimed to be an adherent of the Anglican doctrine that Communion was a commemoration, rather than a physical incarnation of the body and blood of Christ. He also referred to the theological view that the presence of the body and blood of Christ within the Communion... [Pg.134]

The results obtained by Garcia Gonzalez and his coworkers attracted interest abroad, and it was a source of great satisfaction for him to receive, in 1953, an invitation from Professor M. L. Wolfrom to write the first of his articles in this Series. A further international recognition as a carbohydrate chemist ensued in 1965, when he was invited to serve as a member of the Editorial Advisory Board of the new international journal Carbohydrate Research. In 1975, he was asked to contribute with a lecture, subsequently published, on Synthesis of Polyhydroxyalkyl Heterocycles, to a Symposium on New Synthetic Methods for Carbohydrates organized by the American Chemical Society to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Society (New York, 1976). [Pg.15]

Because of this fortuitous coincidence, we decided early in the planning of the 2004 Course to set aside time in the program for a ceremony to commemorate the birthday of the laser, with the participation if possible of those who contributed to its initial discovery and development. Unfortunately, Profs. Basov and Prokhorov are no longer living however, Prof. Andrei Varlamov, on behalf of the Russian Academy of Sciences, agreed to attend the ceremony and give his recollections of these gentlemen and their early years of laser research. [Pg.560]

Squire and Messel An early process for making oleum from sulfuric acid produced by the Chamber process. The acid was decomposed at red heat to sulfur dioxide, oxygen, and steam the steam was condensed out, and the remaining gases passed over platinized pumice to form sulfur trioxide, which was absorbed in more chamber acid. Invented by W. S. Squire and R. Messel in 1875 in London and first commercialized there. Messel was one of the founders of the Society of Chemical Industry and is still commemorated in that society by the biennial award of a medal. [Pg.252]
