In the auditorium of the Dijon Academy, harmoniously decorated in the style of Louis XIV, there occurred on November 9,1913, a solemn civic ceremony in honor of the one hundredth anniversary of the discovery of iodine. At that time a commemorative plaque was placed on the birthplace of Courtois, and in the following year a street was named for him. [Pg.740]

John Dalton, regarded by most ehemists as the originator of the first scientifically fruitful chemical atomic theory, lived and worked in Manchester, England, for much of his life. Several commemorations of Dalton can be found in Manchester, from an unobstrusive plaque on the site where Dalton s laboratory once stood to a bronze statue outside the John Dalton building of Manchester Metropolitan University. [Pg.101]

Testimony to the affection that surrounded him was perhaps best expressed by the unveiling, by the student body of the Graduate School, of a commemorative plaque in the Departmental yard, amidst trees and flowers, many of which had been planted by him. It reads simply Ward Pigman, 1910-1977. Scientist, Teacher, Friend. He lived all three to the fullest. [Pg.5]

Geoffrey Wilkinson formally retired in 1988 but continued doing innovative research with a dedicated team. As part of the Centenary celebrations of Imperial College London, two Royal Society of Chemistry National Chemical Landmark plaques were unveiled in May 2007, commemorating the two Nobel Laureates Derek Barton and Geoffrey Wilkinson. Both had been students at the college, both had left and returned some 15 years later to take up professorial chairs there. Wilkinson died on the 26th of September 1996. [Pg.168]

The memorial plaque is not the only tribute to the early history of biocatalysis at Birmingham. The Frankland Building commemorates Percy Frankland, who was professor of chemistry at Mason College, and whose views of biocatalysis have already been noted (Frankland, 1897). The Howarth Building commemorates the leader of the group at Birmingham responsible for their synthesis of L-ascorbic acid (Scheme 1.9). [Pg.30]

This discovery was recognized in 2009 by a Citation for Chemical Breakthrough Award and the inauguration of a commemorative plaque by the Division of History of Chemistry of the American Chemical Society on March 7th 2011 at the Chemistry Institute in Strasbourg, coinciding with the launch of the International Year of Chemistry 2011 in Strasbourg. [Pg.156]

In passing, I would like to suggest that the Institution should press for a plaque to be placed on the wall of 19 Great George Street to commemorate Tower s residence there. The discovery of hydrodynamic lubrication Is no mean event. [Pg.6]

To commemorate his passing and his scientific contributions, the grieving community affixed this plaque, still visible, at his former residence in the Piazza del Carmine no. 7 [6] ... [Pg.19]

The following year, Newlands passed away. A century later, the Royal Society of Chemistry placed a blue commemorative plaque on his home at 19 West Square, London SEll. Maybe the words are a belated apology for the CS response to his 1866 Law of Octaves lecture. [Pg.84]
