Gas-Fired water heaters are also made more efficient by a variety of designs that increase the recov-ei y efficiency. These can be better flue baffles multiple, smaller-diameter flues submerged combustion chambers and improved combustion chamber geometry. All of these methods increase the heat transfer from the flame and flue gases to the water in the tank. Because natural draft systems rely on the buoyancy of combustion products, there is a limit to the recovery efficiency. If too much heat is removed from the flue gases, the water heater won t vent properly. Another problem, if the flue gases are too cool, is that the water vapor in the combustion products will condense in the venting system. This will lead to corrosion in the chimney and possible safety problems. 

This type includes solar pans and submerged combustion units. Submerged combustion evaporators can be used for applications where contamination of the solution by the products of combustion is acceptable. 

Acrolein enters the environment as a result of normal metabolic processes incomplete combustion of coal, wood, plastics, tobacco, and oil fuels and industrial emissions. Acrolein has been detected in smog, foods, and water. It is used extensively in chemical manufacture, for control of fouling organisms, and as an herbicide to control submerged weeds in irrigation canals.

Before the submerged combustion melter can operate successfully, stable combustion of the fuel within the melt must be achieved. The injection of a combustible mixture into a melt results in the formation of cold channels, leading to explosive combustion and excessive melt fluidization. 

Here we describe the results of a model calculation of the wave-induced pressure forces on a submerged half-cylinder, and compare the results with experimental data. The implications of the comparisons for both the validity of the model and the experimental procedure will be examined. Finally, the application of the model to other fluid flows and to combustion problems will be discussed.
