EnZone [Enzyme ozone] A pulp bleaching process using the enzyme xylanase in combination with oxygen, ozone, and hydrogen peroxide. Invented by K.-E. L. Eriksson at the University of Georgia and piloted in 1998. [Pg.100]

Chemical radicals—such as hydroxyl, peroxyhydroxyl, and various alkyl and aryl species—have either been observed in laboratory studies or have been postulated as photochemical reaction intermediates. Atmospheric photochemical reactions also result in the formation of finely divided suspended particles (secondary aerosols), which create atmospheric haze. Their chemical content is enriched with sulfates (from sulfur dioxide), nitrates (from nitrogen dioxide, nitric oxide, and peroxyacylnitrates), ammonium (from ammonia), chloride (from sea salt), water, and oxygenated, sulfiirated, and nitrated organic compounds (from chemical combination of ozone and oxygen with hydrocarbon, sulfur oxide, and nitrogen oxide fragments). ... [Pg.239]

As a result of its saturated polymer backbone, EPDM is more resistant to oxygen, ozone, UV and heat than the low-cost commodity polydiene rubbers, such as natural rubber (NR), polybutadiene rubber (BR) and styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR). Therefore, the main use of EPD(M) is in outdoor applications, such as automotive sealing systems, window seals and roof sheeting, and in under-the-hood applications, such as coolant hoses. The main drawback of EPDM is its poor resistance to swelling in apolar fluids such as oil, making it inferior to high-performance elastomers, such as fluoro, acrylate and silicone elastomers in that respect. Over the last decade thermoplastic vulcanisates, produced via dynamic vulcanisation of blends of polypropylene (PP) and EPDM, have been commercialised, combining thermoplastic processability with rubber elasticity [8, 9]. [Pg.208]

Chemical Properties.—In its chemical character rubidium occupies a position intermediate between potassium and caesium. It combines with atmospheric oxygen and decomposes water more energetically than potassium, and the bright metal ignites spontaneously in dry oxygen. It begins to react with ice at —108° C.18 When dissolved in liquid ammonia, the metal combines with ozone.18 Some of its salts are poisonous. [Pg.189]

Elastomers. Polyurethane elastomers are outstanding for their strength and for resistance to abrasion, oxygen, ozone, and gasohne. This combination of properties has proved particularly useful in shoe soles and heels, oil seals, industrial tires and wheels, chute linings, drive belts, shock absorption and vibration damping, medical products, and miscellaneous industrial applications. [Pg.132]

Establishment of a material s resistance to the typical operational working environment may involve testing singly or in combination with heat, oxygen, ozone, light (usually UV), weathering, chemical resistance, radiation and biodegradation. [Pg.263]
