Com oil processing

Seven diets were constructed from purified natural ingredients obtained from either C3 (beet sugar, rice starch, cottonseed oil, wood cellulose, Australian Cohuna brand casein, soy protein or wheat gluten for protein) or C4 foodwebs (cane sugar, corn starch, com oil, processed corn bran for fiber, Kenya casein for protein) supplemented with appropriate amounts of vitamins and minerals (Ambrose and Norr 1993 Table 3a). The amino acid compositions of wheat gluten and soy protein differ significantly from that of casein (Ambrose and Norr 1993). 

Steeping and wet-milling processes are also utilized to separate soluble compounds from com. One process involves removal of soluble starch and protein from com by steeping com in a warm sulfurous acid solution for about one to two days. The undissolved com solids are then coarsely wet-milled and processed to collect the oil-containing germ for com oil production. Also, for more enzyme-resistant cellulose biomass, sulfuric acid or hydrochloric acid can be used to digest the cellulose polysaccharide into fermentable molecules. 

A cyclic adsorption process for citrus oil processing in supercritical carbon dioxide (SC-C02) was studied with silica gel adsorbent. Based on the adsorption equilibrium properties, where adsorbed amounts decreased with the increase in the solvent density and oxygenated compounds were selectively adsorbed on silica gel, a continuous cyclic operation between the adsorption step at 8.8 MPa and 313 K, and the desorption step at 19.4 MPa and 313 K was demonstrated Highly concentrated fraction of oxygenated com pounds was continuously obtained for the desorption and blowdown step. The proposed system showed the feasibility of the continuous operation for citrus oil processing. 

This is made from a mixture of 90-98% liquid oil and 2-10% fully hydrogenated soybean oil. The blend is specially processed to obtain the pourable consistency. The fully hydrogenated component can also be made from canola or com oil. 

By proper handling and processing, most oils can be made bland and stable. Complete removal of the corny flavor from com oil is rather difficult. However,...
