Burnt siennas are reddish brown in masstone with a salmon-colored tint. The difference in hue between raw and burnt sienna results from the conversion of yellow iron oxide to red iron oxide during calcination, during which the water of crystallization is driven off. Burnt siennas typically contain 55-80% Fe203. 

For a given color tint, i.e., corresponding to a definite value of a/(l — a), the actual pH will clearly depend on the value of the ionic strength of the solution at low ionic strengths, e.g., less than about 0.01, the neutral salt error is negligible for most purposes. 

The most significant inorganic color pigments are classified by color tint and discussed as follows. 

Colorants and opacifiers are typically used at low concentrations in the wet gel formulation. A wide range of colorants such as FD C and D C water-soluble dyes, certified lakes, pigments, and vegetable colors have been incorporated into Softgel shells alone or in combination to produce the desired color, tint, or hue for product identification. A general rule in color selection is that the color of the capsule shell should be similar to or darker than the fill material to reduce the contrast with the seams. 

The second type comprises pigment-containing nail enamels. The coloring tints, pigments, pearls, and lakes are suspended with the aid of an organophilic, thixotropic gellant, such as stearalkonium hectorite in a non-aqueous vehicle, containing butyl acetate, ethyl acetate, and isopropyl alcohol solvents in which the primary plasticized nitrocellulose and toluene sulfonamide—formaldehyde resin film formers are dissolved. Nail enamel is an excellent example of a permanent suspension in a non-aqueous vehicle. 

Mixtures of various dyes have been used often to permit a preliminary determination of pH. The components of such mixtures are chosen so that different color tints appear over a wide range of pH (3 to 11), making it possible to obtain an approximate value for the acidity of a solution. These universal indicators are not intended for accurate pH determinations because the color difference attending a given pH increment is much less than for single unmixed indicators. Carbazole (1) (16.7 g, 95.7 mmol) was dissolved in boiling glacial acetic acid (260 mL), and potassium iodide (11 g, 66.4 mmol) added. The solution was cooled somewhat, finely powdered potassium iodate (16 g, 66.4 mmol) added, and the mixture then boiled until it acquired a clear straw-colored tint (10 min). The hot solution was decanted from the insoluble potassium iodate and allowed to cool slowly to 45 °C. The faintly brown, nacreous plates that separated were rapidly filtered off and recrystallized from glacial acetic acid (or alcohol), the solution being allowed to cool to 45 °C and filtered as before from the white, nacreous plates (10-12 g) of 3-iodocarbazole. ... 

Besides white pigmentation, white pigments impart to materials white reflectance, increased brightness and modiflcation of other colors (tints). They may also give higher UV-protection and weather resistance. 

Next to white, black is probably the most important color in the coatings industry due to its popularity as a color tint, particularly for all shades of gray, which are made by adding black to white.
