Cold combination preparations, other

Acetaminophen, also known as paracetamol in other countries, is available widely without prescription as an analgesic and antipyretic. It is available in various oral dosage forms, including an extended-release preparation. Acetaminophen may be combined with other drugs, such as antihistamines or opioid analgesics, and marketed in cough and cold preparations, menstrual remedies, and allergy products. 

Use Q. extracts are us in combination with other extracts in some antitussive and antiasthmatic preparations. The bark is used in traditional South American medicine for treatment of liver disorders, febrile colds, and for anti-allergic purposes it is recommended as a fever-lowering agent for malaria as well as an additive to phytopharmaceuticals with expectorant properties. Bark extracts are used industrially in South America to modify the tastes of alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, milk products, and for other food technological purposes. Cell suspension cultures started from shoots of the plants produce only few alkaloids, including the new alkaloid aspidochibine, with a novel skeletal type, 3-oxo-14,15-dehydrorha-zinilam, 11-hydroxytubotaiwine as well as a new dioxopiperazine... 

Figure 6.1 Aspirin by itself is a drug, but when aspirin is combined with other active ingredients, such as in a cold preparation, that preparation is a medicine. 

Silicone resins may be combined with other resinous materials to give modified resins which find use in surface coatings. Combination of the two materials may be achieved either by blending or copolymerization. Silicone resins with a high phenyl content are compatible to some extent with various resins such as alkyd, esterified epoxy and phenol-, urea- and melamine-formaldehyde resins and cold blending may be carried out. However, the limited compatibility of the components restricts the scope of the products which may be obtained. Copolymerization has been applied mainly to silicone-alkyd resins, which are prepared by heating a low molecular weight... 

Sodium Aluminum Sulfate (SAS). Sodium aluminum sulfate is a dehydrated double salt of aluminum and sodium sulfate. It does not react with baking soda in cold, but in the heat of oven 1 mol of SAS produces 6 mol of carbon dioxide from reacting with baking soda. Historically, SAS was one of the first materials used to Hberate carbon dioxide from baking soda. Today its primary use is in household baking powder production. It is used either alone or in combination with MCP. SAS is not recommended for use in prepared mixes due to its lack of compatibiHty with other ingredients in a mix. 

Other salts, e.g. the potassium salt can be prepared from the Na salt by dissolving it (147mg) ice-cold in H2O acidified to pH 2, extracting with Et20 ( 50mL), wash once with H2O, and extract with 2mL portions of 0.3% KHCO3 until the pH of the extract rose to -6.5 (-7 extractns). For the triimides, it is expedient to increase the scale of the preparation, and then to effect a preliminary concentration of the triimides from the other imides so that the chromatography can be done on a much smaller column. The crude imide mixture is made as just described, but uang 3 1. of dimethylfonn-amide and 420 ml. (5.2 moles) of disulfur dichloride. After grinding finely once or twice as before, it is extracted with successive portions of dry, peroxide-free ethyl ether, totaling 3 1. The combined ether extracts are left to evaporate spontaneously until 150-300 ml. of cold liquid is left. Evaporation is continued until it is judged that more than half of the solute has crystallized. The solution is decanted away from the mass of crystals of heptasulfur imide and hexasulfur diimides, and allowed to evaporate to dryness, leaving 30-40 g. of solid, which consists...
